To start I have asked the DNR this question and their response was if it falls in the regulations then it’s okay so I thought I’d ask here to make sure, my question was if I was to load my 460 weatherby brass with expanding slugs could I use it during deer season? Before the jumping down my throat about what do you want to do this for starts, my main point is having a necked down rifle cartridge during deer season and that’s the only one I have that would meet the criteria as I read it. The a picture of the ammo at the end is from weatherby. RIFLES: Ri es ring straight wall or other cen- ter re ammunition propelling an expanding-type bullet with a maximum diameter of no less than .350 of an inch and no larger than .500 of an inch and with a published or calculated muzzle energy of 500 foot pounds or higher is legal for hunting deer during the youth and disabled hunting season and rst and second shotgun seasons. The following is a partial list of allowable cartridg- es that has generated the most questions on legal- ity. Cartridges meeting the criteria de ned above are legal whether listed here or not. .35 Whelen .350 Legend .358 Winchester .375 Winchester .40 S&W .44 Magnum .444 Marlin .45 Long Colt .45 Raptor .450 Bushmaster .450 Marlin .45-70 Govt .460 S&W .500 S&W

I honestly don’t know, it’s taken a long time to get this far, at one point you could only use shotguns with slugs, then they allowed large caliber handguns, then straight walled rifles such as a 45-70, and now like ADC said they allow necked down ammo, the weird part is they allow you to shoot anything when hunting coyotes. And at night too!

Same here in Illinois, we are still shotgun slugs only for deer. But We can hunt coyotes with any caliber rifle. Doesnt make sense but what government run anything makes sense.

The cartridges listed don’t fly as flat or as far as say a .270 making them safer is my take on it! That has always been my understanding of the Midwest states with those type rules. The land being as flat and treeless as it is I can see a flat trajectory cartridge having the ability to cross two or three counties before coming to rest. That and much of that area is big open fields dotted with farmsteads spread evenly about a mile or so apart.

The cartridges listed don’t fly as flat or as far as say a .270 making them safer is my take on it! Youre probably right. It's a dumb rule. WI as you know was like that for years. They finally changed it a few years ago to allow rifles and nothing bad came if it like many thought. It's fear and uninformed people that create these stupid regulations.

Be different if there were trees to stop the bullets like there is in Wisconsin. These idiots over here shoot at running deer at 200+ yards with shotguns let alone let them use high power rifles. Groups of 30 or more pushing small sections of woods. I use to live and hunt Wisconsin deer, 30 deer seen while hunting is huge. Iowa, if I don't see 40 a day while gun hunting, it's a dead day.
