In case some needs a laugh this just happed. Ran the line and had to stop at the local dollar store in the more hood part of town to get some ice. Of course the local hustle man ( you know the junkies who have a new story every week why they need just $5 or what ever) is sitting out side trying to get some "charity*. Well I walked in and paid for my ice before he could ask me anything. Come out grab my bag and walk to my trunk to ice this coon down. We I toss him on the ground real quick and while I'm dumping the ice hustle man come around my trunk and says
" Hay young brotha can you spar......"
I look at him and he's staring at this dead coon at my feet then his eyes move to my trunk full of traps with and my Ruger 10/22 plain to see then to me.
He does that gold fish thing not speaking finally he just says
" Umm neva mind you look a little dangerous " and basically runs off behind the store

Reminds me of a incident my brother had. He was in a not so good neighborhood. A sketchy guy started to follow him and size him up. My brother had a portable scanner on his hip that was the size of a handheld radio. It sqawked a bit as a call came across with some random radio traffic. The sketchy guy paused when he heard it. My brother pulled it off his hip and started talking into it. It was a receiver only , no transmitting. When the sketchy guy heard/seen that , he made an immediate U turn.
It worked......lol

Wolfdog, I wear shorts to work…365 days a year. Well it was late on a Friday and I was finishing up some work at a business and 3 individuals started approaching me in the ally. I was aware and prepared as the company allows when I hear one say, “Nah man, that %+#*#+#+# crazy, he’s wearing shorts in the middle of winter. Let’s find someone else.” And so they did an about face and I went on about my business.

Lucky you didn't lose everything in your trunk,..nice catch!

If I am in Anchorage (heaven forbid) and need to stop at Walmart I am always ready for this type of thing. The parking lot is usually overrun with 15-20 of these "opportunists". They move in on every car that is parking. I always yell at them when they get within 50 feet and I'm never polite about it.

Buddy of mine shared one with me. We had gone to a marine salvage type sale at a large marina. He bought a broken VHF radio with microphone and antenna that was on the garbage/dogmeat table. It cost all of $5. I asked him if he knew how to fix it , he said no. I was confused.

He told me he was going to mount it in his other boat. Just physically mount the radio and antenna and not bother with fixing it or installing the wiring , just mount it.

This is why , when he would be out on the water and some Yahoo with a Jet-Ski would get too close being a jerk he would pick up the microphone and yell into it " There is a jet-skier jumping my wake at such and such " all while pointing at the jet-skier. The jet skier seeing this takes off and disappears fearing he will be cited by the marine patrol. Works. Every. Time. It works so good that if the jet-skier is spotted again later in the day , he will take off again fearing the boater with the VHF radio. Well worth the $5 and the time to mount the radio and antenna.
