Got in a heated discussion with the lady friend last night about this. Figured I may as well transfer the argument over to here! So she is a dog lover, as am I. But I draw the line at lap dogs/potlickers. I won't have a dog that has a sole purpose in life of laying around the house and not doing anything. I think its detrimental to the dogs health and isn't fair to the dog. Dogs are born to hunt and be active. I told her I won't have a dog who doesn't have a purpose in its life. Boy did that start and argument. She said the dogs purpose is to make her happy, and I think that's complete crap. I know the dog wants to make you happy, but that shouldn't be the reason that you get the dog in the first place. If a dog doesn't serve some purpose I don't see the use in having it around. Am I crazy for thinking that way? It all started with this picture on Facebook

What happens when a good hunting/working dog gets old and starts slowing down and gaining weight?
Cold as ice!

For me personally, every dog I have had was for a purpose. Mostly I justified "needing" a dog to hunt but honestly, I hunt the dog about 3 days a year. It was just my excuse to have one. Many of the dogs I have had went where I went, ate what I ate and slept where I slept. I just enjoy having a dog and being around them. I think the reason for having one is a personal choice.
I have nothing clever to put here.

dogs are live stock we get attached to
I say this having just put down one of the best dogs ever my 14 year old German Shepard , she lost bladder control , wasn't eating , even beef hand fed and was loosing weight fast and was having trouble breathing.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I prefer working dogs and never had a desire to have a lap dog. That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with having a lap dog if that's what a person wants. I certainly don't think having a useless lap dog is unfair to the dog! Unfair to whoever is paying it's vet bills maybe lol.
Why not find a happy medium and let her make a pet out of one of your hunting dogs?

Normally, I would agree. However, I know of two elderly shut-ins whose pets are their only companions. Pets are over weight. Not as bad as some of the pictures here, though. I have a bigger problem with people who let their little dog sit or stand on their lap while driving.

What happens when a good hunting/working dog gets old and starts slowing down and gaining weight? Retire it. They did their ten years or so of service. Good on them, they earned the right to lay around. Just like you when you turn 65 LOL Why not find a happy medium and let her make a pet out of one of your hunting dogs? That's what we are doing with the lab pup I have now. She sleeps inside in a crate at night in the bedroom but spends all day in her pen outside. Its working out pretty good. This argument just started over getting another dog just to lay around the house and be her dog

I'll agree and disagree. Dogs have traits bred into them and are happiest an healthiest when "used" for those purposes on a regular basis. I believe this is true whether it's a pointer, retriever, herder, trapping dog or frisbee catcher. Just because a particular breed doesn't fit into a category YOU consider useful (for your purposes) doesn't mean it can't be a perfect fit for someone else's purpose! There is ample evidence of the health benefits (phyisical and mental) for senior citizens owning and caring for a dog. There is a white-haired man that walks his poodle on a leash past my house (on a pretty steep road) about every day around 5 PM. I believe they are both healthy and happy and good for each other. I believe the key is the active daily interactions. I know plenty of "bird dogs" that almost never get out of their kennel. I think we can agree keeping a dog around and never doing anything with it is shameful. But, whatever breed fits in the home and lifestyle of the owners, and gets daily exercise and attention, is "useful" and promotes happiness and health. Lighten up a little:)

They're working dogs, but also house pets, lol.

If you want a small dog, you could get a rat terrier you can train to be varmint killers... Small dogs have their place for sure. There is a jack Russell that went viral retrieving ducks and geese. I'll find a pic of him. Look up "Gator the Duck Dog"

No matter what a dog is doing, it is doing what the owner wants. If not, there is a good chance they will get rid of the dog. Some people want a dog to lay on the couch, others want them to chase cows or hunt. If the dog is fitting it purpose, good for the dog and owner. It's not my job to decide what your dog should do.

Never read all of the replies, but good golly hope you don't treat your friends and kids the same way !!
Life is meant to enjoy, and use it for such enjoyment, that means in many ways others don't agree with, to each his/her own as long as it's not detrimental to others doing so, in my view !
Sorry if my opinions or replies offend you, they are not meant to !
