I'm very green, but I home tanned a possum last season, and I swear it is the softest, most comforting fur that I've dealt with! I'm sad that they have such a bad rap, cause if it were up to me...I'd have a blanket made out of this stuff! Wifey is clear with a big NO though! Lol

Yuck! Ugly garbage eaters.
I found that if I let them go, they just wound up back in the trap. Sent them to possum heaven.

I whack every single grinner I can. Although one year a few years back while coon trapping (just before the last tumble in coon prices.....so '07 or '08?) I caught so many of the dang things that I got sick of killing them. I would just Savell them (slap-tame) until they did their play dead thing, then take the trap off their foot and toss them aside. I got over 50 in just a short time. I loath 'possums. I don't believe I ever got more than a buck for a pelt, but I can't remember. Like Thumbian said, if we got $10 per 'possum it really would be like hitting the lotto.
That whole B.S. story about 5000 ticks a day make me wanna scream.

you dont have to smack em around to release them. they rarely bite

I dispatch and toss them. We have LOTS of them and they love turkey, duck, pheasant and song bird eggs.

When I was still trapping, We had a private buyer that would give us $3-5/ea for possums. He would tan them, and sell at a Rendezvous. We worked out a deal to sell the possums cheap, but he would pay a higher price for other fur. He would place orders before season for x-amount of possums, coons, beaver, yotes, fox, skunks (nice white stripes), etc. and would usually pay 10-15% above going market. We had this arrangement for over a decade. Sadly, cancer got the better of him.

I have a guy that pays $5 each froze whole. Sure helps offset gas cost.
Wish I had more time to trap....

No possum should ever get a pass. They are continually expanding their range and are holy heck on ground nesting birds of all sorts. Vermin, pure and simple. No need to worry for them, like cockroaches, will be on earth long after we have had our run.
