Humans didn't always eat three squares a day. For most of our history, food was a daily struggle, and it was commonplace to skip a meal, or day, or two of eating, simply because you didn't have anything to eat. It's perfectly normal and natural for us to fast from time to time.

Absolutely doable. I have personally witnessed inmates fast for 15+ days at a time on a regular basis. Many can go longer, recently one when over 50 days. Doc steps in after 30-35 days, and we force feed 2 bottles of Ensure/day. Just enough to survive. Many officers and 'vics do the intermittent fasting too, myself included. Though for a lot shorter periods. My in-laws came from communist Poland, and they say it was common to skip a day when rations were in short supply.
