Put the magnet in a small ziplock bag when using it around steel filings. To clean the filings off of the bag, just remove the magnet from the bag.

move the magnet before you start grinding

grab at the clumps with a rag , and pull away

you won't get it all but most of it

or air like others have said

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

That looks like welding slag .
Use petroleum jelly to coat them , same with the tip on your welding gun .
Rags , old shirts anything to wipe them off with , and either burn or toss in trash .
Lot cheaper than the anti slag dip welding shops sell .

If you cant rub it off with your fingers...theyre too soft yet!!! grin grin
More heat treat! Lol.
But until then, blow gun and safety glasses into garbage can.
Those tiny fines and slivers are the worst ever.

Where you see slag? That's shavings on magnet.

It looks more like welding slag than metal shavings or maybe grinder shavings .
I don't see any shiny slivers , plus that's a welding magnet .

Although, what is that growing outta the top?

Nevermind, probably just metallic magnetic buildup.

Great advice.

As soon as you do that, your inviting melted plastic, contaminates.
and therefore porosity(weakness) into your welds. Just keep em clean.

let the chips cool if using the bag trick. can always just dunk or spray the magnet down with ID flush, etc. afterwards to clean it. I would be more concern about contaminates with tig welding but even than nothing a quick wipe wont fix.

Air nozzle followed by a wipe down with ID flush would be my choice where I work. I do like the bag trick though... The only problem i see is you would need multiple baggies as once they start tearing than you need to replace it.

I just wipe them off with a steel brush or rag. What ever is laying around.

I epoxied my helper magnets like that, works like a charm, easy to wipe off and as long as you don't put them on hot spots last forever !

Your still going to collect , but it is way easier to get off, especially with a air nozzle !
