I go out 2 hours after dark to get a hen that won’t go in the coop she’s roosting in the trees every night I seen the tree she went up into tonight and found her. On the way out the door I see 3 on the deck after catching the one I was after we go for the other 3 on the deck. I look over by the truck and 3 more are standing by it, I’ve had a couple out under the yard light before but they were all over tonight I found 2 more under the back deck in total darkness.
They were cooped up the last few days maybe they wanted more fresh air. LOL

Chickens will do that if a predator goes in the coop. I would check your coop well.
Keith X2 Took in a stray cat once........it took an interest in the chickens, went into chicken house and coiled up in a next box just as they were going to roost. Chickens were still standing outside well after dark. Evicted cat moved still shook up chickens in........they stopped laying for several days and never did get back to where they were prior to event. Cat found a new home.

My girls live on easy street the coop is insulated and heated always feed and water available to them. I moved 3 out of the brooder house months ago to put 12 newer ones into it. 2 went in the coop the second time the 3rd one was never interested in the coop she likes the shelter belt evergreen selection.
Just weird the ones staying out are 3 different age classes not one specific age group. I bought 25 last year the tamest chickens I’ve ever had they stay right at your feet not spooky like most are. Have had a few stay out after dark under the yard light but tonight was just crazy to have so many out at one time.

I used to have a motion light outside my coop. When the wind blew or some animal set it off I had several hens that would come outside. Once out they would mill around and keep it from going off, they were just asking for an owl to get them. I had to turn off the light to stop that behavior. I never had any refuse to go to the coop to roost.

I pitched to stubborn one in the coop and went to get the others and she went right up on the roost with the rest of them. LOL Will check on them shortly and do another look around.

I have close to 100 chickens and several coops. Many of minr began roosting out in strange areas once cold weather set in good.
Did a little research and found out that if there are fresh droppings from the summer in the co-op it is actually more likely that they will get frostbite in the. Coop than in the trees.
Something about the moisture in the droppings.
I also set out some rat traps and poison in case.
My dogs have kept the possum. Coon and fixed at bay so far.
I am going to take several to my hope auction weds to cut the feed bill down.
My more game thickens..my lakenvelders and Americans are more likely to roost out than some.
And my ROOSTERS are just as bad about roosting out..i have 15 or. So
IF IDIOTS GREW ON TREES THIS PLACE WOULD BE AN ORCHARD !

They squabble some but no bulling I put a end to that right away the roost I’d chest high and they have a 15 hole nesting box option. The roof is vented in the summer plugged in the winter to hold in the heat. Heat lamp in the cold parts of winter I don’t introduce younger birds until they are almost full grown to avoid bulling.

Some of moisture comes from droppings but most comes from their breath. They dump a lot of moisture inside at night, and it will condense on anything, including combs. And that is the reason for the ventilation. Air has to turn over.
Uninsulated metal roof and sides is the worst. Under right conditions, it will literally rain inside from all the condensation. Heat lamp keeps that down it well insulated dusty if nothing else.
