That 4 minutes of Star trek was more than I have ever watched in my entire life

I hear ya. But the message made enough of an impression that I remember it to this day. The buildup to this scene was that Picard only had to admit that there were 5 lights and the torture would have ended.

Didn't know that Star Trek used that in their show. The original 2+2=5 comes from the book 1984. The main character (I think, it's been years) is arrested by The Party for "thought crime" - having thoughts that go against The Party. He fights the idea that 2+2=5 until he's tortured enough and finally accepts it as fact.


I read the book 35 years ago and thought I understood it until I started to see little bits of it's predictions coming true. I never thought I would live in an America where absolute non-sense (men can be women) would be pushed as the truth by the political machine and "free" press would go along - and a large percentage of the population would believe it.
