I have stated on this forum before that we have more bobcats than fox. The state of NJ is in denial and calls them an endangered specie. The past few years I have not snared fox or coyotes in order not to catch bobcats. This year I decided the heck with it I am snaring some fox. I have skipped many ideal snare locations as they were also where I expected to catch a cat. Have not used big (or small) baits for the same reason. Skipped setting crossing logs, in years past they were my #1 sets, sometimes getting up to 40 fox on a single log in a month. What I have done is place my snares far out in open fields, not near trees or woodlines, where cats should not roam. The results: I have only set about 20 snares and in four nights I have caught 4 red fox, three of which were killed by bobcats, and 6 bobcats. It is so frustrating!! I have tried big loops, small loops, oblong loops, loaded loops, high snares, low snares, 5/64 and 3/32 cable either 7x7 or 1x19. NOTHING keeps a cat from getting caught if you do not want him. I swear that if they were legal and I went all out snaring I could top 100 cats in 14 days.
Sorry to rant but I waited my whole life to be able to trap like crazy when I retired and now that the time is here I can't do it. Here are todays catch, 1 dead fox (cat killed) and 2 cats which I released.

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

If the state would git out of the way then you could cut a wide swath.

That's frustrating for sure. I try to avoid them early in the season before they prime up and still catch them out in open pastures where you wouldn't think a cat would be. They are about like a opossum, they'll work any type of set and are not trap/set shy. I've caught them in footholds, bodygrips, snares and cages. Hopefully your trappers association can keep track of how many are being caught to help lobby for a season.
