The closest I have had one is 4 feet. Did not shoot but with hindsight should have - that bear was too habituated to people.
My wife has a good repertoire of anti-bear songs for hiking in bear country. There is no question about who is the boss when a big male brownie is around. One day we had been catching rainbow trout all day at an alpine lake. We did not take any fish, but still smelled fishy. A big brownie paced us about 20 yards to the side of the trail we were using. 20 yards is about 3 seconds so I had a gun ready. After about 50 yards he drifted away.
An uncle did 30 years of commercial salmon fishing and had quite a few good tales.

Nice story. We live and recreate with the big brown ones here. They are pretty much just big dumb animals.
Good to see the perpetuation of the lore.
Yeah they are pretty docile most of the time until you run into one in the willows along a salmon stream, or have to go into the thick stuff after a wounded one. A lot of people have been torn up and killed by them so it's always in the back of your mind. I doubt if this one had any malicious intent, probably just more curious than anything, but that doesn't really come to mind when one starts coming your way at a gallop.
