Hurricane Ida took away my most productive spot for otter with the way she tossed around trees and stuff in the water which changed the dynamics of some of the banks. I found another spot that has a tree at a 45 along the bank and a hole underneath that an otter will absolutely go into to investigate. However, the hole is on both sides of the big tree on the bank. My question is, should I block one side and only have one side accessible or should I set both sides ? I know coons are going to plug up my traps at low tide because of the amount of sign that is there. They walk right underneath the tree along the bank. Thanks in advance

Set both sides and make some more coon sets close by.

Not trying to be a smart arse, but the time it took you to post this question and then check back for answers you could have set another trap and caught a double last night.

Think on your feet and for yourself.

Good trapping.

Well I will be a smart arse and tell you that NJ Otter season doesn’t open until December 26. So thanks for your input of zero

You asked about whether to set traps on both sides. You didnt mention that you were just day-dreaming.

My advice is to wait until your season opens and set a trap in both sides. Otters run in groups.

Good grief!

Shouldn't take a lot of pondering to catch one Otter, the limit in NJ.

One otter and only 3 traps allowed. With that restriction I want them in the best possible locations. 2 in one spot changes things a bit

Only daydreaming about being allowed to use more than 3 traps for otter. That changes things a bit, but I’m sure you didn’t know about that regulation

You're correct. I'm not familiar with NJ regs. The only thing I know about NJ is that Newt Sterling (a very good trapper) lives there and there is a part of your state called the pine barrens that looks almost exactly like here in southeast Georgia. We have no otter limit and they are litterally everywhere down here in these Ga swamps and streams.

Better trappers in NJ than Georgia-The Jersey boys near got them cleaned out.

If I was restricted to one otter and 3 traps I would not put two at the same location. I would block one down.

I don’t have much experience trapping otter, but I would set 3 “otter” traps and a dozen or two for “raccoon”. How is your fish and game going to distinguish between the two?

Good point. I have caught them in my 1.5 coils set for coon.

Anything bigger than a 160 is considered a trap to be used for otter or beaver. I was looking to put out 3 220's
