Should I be sending my cats from last year to the March or June FHA sale? These are heavy XXL toms with above average bellies that I have saved. I have heard from buyers that cat prices are expected to be better than last year, but the latest FFG predicted prices 15-20% down from last year. Does anyone know what the word on the street is and should I be putting in the effort to go after cats or just leave them alone for a season?

One buyer (John Graham) said about 3 weeks ago to look for a repeat of last year.

If anybody can remember back to "normal" years, the cat market always started out a little cautious and then seemed to advance towards the end of the season. But if I was you, I would certainly consider some of the better western association sales. If things are getting better it is reflected there pretty fast.

For your section cat, I would forget FH and go with one of the trappers sales. Lots to choose from - listed in no particular order.

Idaho
Oregon
Nevada
Utah
Colorado
South Dakota
Montana

At a trappers sale, you have control over what your cats sell for.

There will not be a state sale early enough to set a precedence before FHA's early receiving date. A western sale that allows minimums would be your best bet. Utah will be the first true cat price establishing sale.

Big heavy AA cats will bring good money, but the basis drops of quickly from there.
