A question for the likes of Wissmiss or Wywolfer. I'm thinking of buying beaver from FHA online and wonder how the shipping is handled. I would have them shipped to Moyles. Is there a fee or do I just pay for the shipping? Thanks for some first hand knowledge and Merry Christmas.

Why? Just trap your own , or go to a state trappers organization fur sale .
I shipped there for years , learned and got started with the help of a fur dealer I knew for years .
Never was disappointed in results , some took longer to sell , but always got more than selling local .
Now when NY had a big buyer it was different .
Now you only have FH , so since NAFTA got caught and went under , who do you count on ?
I can almost bet all fur goes through FH , don't care who you sell to , as the fur buyers sold to them or NAFTA .

He likely wants graded and sized lots.Less wastage and product looks a lot better than a mismatch trapper lot of fur.
And can likely buy M or LM hvy #1 sel beaver cheaper than catching them.Downside is tanning cost for smaller beaver.(more per sq inch)

You guys are over thinking this, he seems to be asking about the cost of shipping to another person or entity rather than his cost for pelts he has or is buying.

And wanting first hand info not some sort of I guess, maybe or something like that !

I don't really know if he can , but he would have to go to the auction to bid on them .
Guess he can do it online , but I have no idea how that works .
He needs to ask at Fur Harvesters site or call them .
I've called them over the years about a few things .
Might get more than he wants in a lot also .
Don't remember how many to a lot , any more .

Any purchase of fur at FH has fees - commission and packing - added on to the hammer price. These fees can change, last season it was 8.2% commission and $3.00 handling on beaver.

A beaver you paid $5.00 for becomes an $8,41 beaver and it hasn’t left the FH building.

You have a couple of options to get the pelts from North Bay to Moyles (or where ever it is going.

Option 1. Hire a broker of some sort to handle the paperwork and logistics. Several options - which I will discuss later if you want. Fees involved are -

Brokers commission
Transportation
Wildlife inspection fee
Permits, if the broker doesn’t have them.
Customs inspection fee
Possibly more

Fees will depend on size of shipment. The bigger the shipment, the cheaper the fees per pelt.

Example - in April 2021 I bought some mid grade red fox and fisher at FH. They came in with a friends shipment. From North .bay to Moscow, it was $3.73 per red fox and $5.64 per fisher. Beaver would probably be similar on a large shipment.

A small shipment - say 500 beaver - would be more expensive per pelt.

Option 2. Bring your goods in on a FH truck. This option is NOT always available and is subject to FH descretion and time table. It is also NOT available for CITES goods.

Before and after each sale, FH has a truck going between Cambridge and North Bay. Going to NB, it is hauling bulks that were stored iAt Cambridge and sold at the sale. On the return trip - a back haul - non CITES goods sold at auction and destined to US customers can be brought to Cambridge. From there Greg will send them on to the final destination.

All of that can be a lengthy process. Not top priority when there are incoming goods to deal with.

The FH truck method can be very economical. Like 50 cents a beaver from NB to Cambridge. Greg at Cambridge works to get you the best rates to Moyles.

I’ve used the FH truck method very successfully. The Key is Patience!! From time bought to time pelts get to Moyles, could be 2-3 months.

I think that covers everything of importance.

Any questions???

You might be able to get the fur shipped from North Bay to Winnipeg to get tanned, then have the tanned goods shipped from winnipeg to Alaska. It is easier to ship tanned fur across the border than raw.
Just a suggestion. You would have to call FHA to check.

The packing fee is $3.00. I knew that. Does this mean they will pack them to ship. For example to ship through the mail? Is the mail an option? I can ship 20 beaver from here through the mail for about $5 a pelt. I'd rather buy PT and have them ship at my expense. The cross border mailing is not possible?

BTW Thanks.

Is that International? I was thinking of this if cross border shipping is cost prohibitive.

Shipping pelts from North Bay to a US address is not an option. You run a high probability of having the pelts seized.

The FH packing fee does cover putting them in a box suitable for shipping. Many of those boxes are much larger than postnoffice limits.

I would need a price list. Not on their weak website. I've worked with some of their hides, they looked acceptable.

They have been selling beaver at auction cheaper than I can produce them for years if I value my time, except 1 year in the last 30. Beaver prices have just gotten so ludicrously low, I can't resist the temptation look into working less for more money. Looks like you don't even have to bid to buy what you need either.

Is that a covid thing of just normal import problems?
