I just spent about 6 hours pilfering through a coin collection, I know nothing about all of this so was just googling items as I went. There are some cool ones from early to mid 1800s, several what I guess are called “Morgan’s” silver dollars, “peace heads” silver dollars, American eagle silver bullion coins, “barbers” half dollars, “walking liberty” half dollars, bunch of pre-64 quarters etc...etc..I guess I just wanted to see if any of you coin nerds had advice as far as how to proceed on getting an estimate of its real world value. Do you just take it to a coin shop and they go through it with you? Is the market for the silver stuff good right now? Would you hold onto the silver? While they are neat, We don’t really have any use or sentimental value to half cent, 3 cent pieces, or a bag full of wheat and Indian head pennies...thanks.

Only thing I know about coins is that you should not attempt to clean them.
Moosetrot Haha that’s about where I’m at, and I just learned that while I was googling things. Luckily most of the important looking ones are clean and in little case things.

Your old coins are worth more than their silver content value. You should be able to locate a website that will grade and make an offer, mifmyou wish to sell. If all you want is an appraisal, a coin shop can suffice. There is an annual publication coin guide you can purchase as well.
Do you have a 1916D dime? I will make you an offer on it.
A coins value is highly dependent on its grade.

A silver pre-64 quarter was worth about $5 bucks a few years ago....maybe slightly more now. It may bring more as a collection than individually. Just an idea. I claim to know nothing. Oh, stay away from pawn shops. Most of them have done time for rape........

Pre 64 means anything before 1964. That is not correct it's actually pre 65. A silver quarter is worth 4.14 at the moment.

A coins value is highly dependent on its grade. I’ve got a couple 1916s, but from my vast knowledge they appear to be “barbers” and not the D mercury ones that are worth a bunch...

Remember that the calculator on Coinflation only tells you the scrap silver value of the coin and not the numismatic value. Morgan dollar are still going in the 35-40 dollar range for circulated. A carson City mint morgan dollar is worth more.

A carson City mint morgan dollar is worth more. Yes I know. I studied numismatics and grading for years but as with many things, it depends on WHO is doing the grading, honesty, and supply and demand :-)

Numies are a market with flux just like any others. Take your coins to a numismatist you trust implicitly do not take the word of anyone you don't know. Especially someone on the internet or your local pawn rip. Eagles (assuming silver) not proof just for general circulation are usually worth about 5 dollars over spot. Any encapsulated or graded may be much more. Gold Eagles a whole different animal. If you must, pay for a good estimate. I would suggest hold them, semi precious metals are a good storage of dollars. The wheaties are worth at least the current spot of copper and again possibly much more due to numie value. Have someone you trust look at them before you make your decision. Just my opinion. Case

Coins dont eat much. I doubt they depreciate any significant amount and then only temporary. Unless you need money just keep them. If you squander them on a cruise or something I suspect you will end up regretting it.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

If you take it to a coin dealer say you don’t want to sell it but want it appraised for insurance purposes. That way they give it to you straight, then never sell it for less than that number.
