Not in my experience. All my coyote traps wear them on the stake end.

If they are good enough for JC Conners then they are good enough for me I wonder if he started using them because the traps and staking systems weren't as robust as what is available now?

The quality of a trap has nothing really to do with using shock springs. The entire point is to let the animal have give when it's trying gain momentum to yank away. Keeping the line static gives it something hard to pull against and pull out of the trap easier. It's the same as if I am holding your hand, and you try to pull it away and I move my arm towards you, you are going to have a tough time pulling from my grip. If I kept my arm and hand in one position, you could crank, torque, pry, and whatever else to get out of the grip.
So the shock spring is to help prevent pull outs and quality traps don't figure into this?? Must be way over my head...??

Good quality in-line springs, such as PITs and Connors, help prevent shoulder injuries in live market coyotes. Lessens that hard jolt when they lunge. If you have ever seen a lunging coyote in a trap with an in-line spring being worked then you will see the advantages here.
The springs also lessen the likelihood of a pullout and pulled stakes. But, if the target is coyotes, the spring needs to be the heavier wt pull rating. That strong spring will be like a straight chain if a lesser sized critter is caught such as a fox.
Now the negatives.....they get in the way when bedding if you have shorter chains. After a catch: scat and urine-soaked dirt wedges in the spring coils. When trap is re-set critters tend to dig at the in-line spring due to the odor, especially coons.
During my live market years I had springs on all footholds...about 250 traps. Since getting away from live market a few years ago and re-tooling to different type/brand/size traps, I am slowly removing them from my custom chains.
