Well we had 3 Coyote's but the thevies beat us to them.
Would of been ms.v first double on Coyote's.
We each had 2 traps set , they remade 2 set's without pancovers .
And put snow over them, put the dog's facing the wrong way.

And best of all put a frozen dead coyote in the middle trap,
It was a nasty ol coyote with mange, so a good trade on there part.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them?

I caught a coon and someone killed it, skinned it and put it back in the trap. This was back when coon had value.

I could but , have in the past and nothing happens.
Wardon will say it's coyote s and private land make a statement to sheriff's office.
And that's that, have done it in the past and nothing comes of it.

Any tracks? Maybe some evidence there. Private land so owner should know who has permission to be there. Successful thieves come back. Most thieves are stupid so a set up may be in order. Had ranchers shoot the catch before figuring they were doin me a favor.

At the very least, inform your local warden about it. They may be doing it to other trappers in the area.

On the plus side, they did not take your traps. Sounds like they will be back to check your traps again.

Unless... I wonder if it could have been dog hunters? Maybe you caught one coyote, and they shot and left it, and the other two traps were sprung by dogs?

Either way, I think I'd call the warden. At least there'll be a record of it if you catch them in the act next time and whup 'em.

Yep called Worden today told him the deal.
He said he he will keep a ear out so see what happens.

I had some snared fox taken from me years ago. Met up with the warden and he told me I probably shouldn't be trapping there. I feel like trappers are just a burden to them. That said what are ya going to do. Without some evidence or ID you just got to keep your chin up, follow the rules, and let the good lord do the rest. These cold temps have been nice for footholds. A whole week or more below freezing!

Pulled the traps, the ranch is a big one so gonna go set more just some place else.
It just sucks the location is a good one.
Probably get a 8-10 coyote in the spot.
No gonna donate to the theives there anymore.
Block management sucks.

Block management should be a sign in or permission list somewhere. Can't be that many people who signed in this time of year. I would check the sign in book. Not sure the details of your sets but there should be kill and catch evidence if something was caught there.

True. If anything, it starts a paper trail for if/when it happens again, especially if you happen to catch them in the act in the future, or if they do it to another trapper who reports it. It can help connect the dots for investigations sometimes. Yeah, it's a long shot. It also might get the warden to do some more patrols in certain problem areas.

Do you have specific enemies to do this? They will be back. Hide a couple trail cameras to get info. Put out a broken one in plain sight for bait to get them to work the set. They may even take it!

I had similar happen to a double on reds during the fur boom. At $100 each, plus traps, the total exceeded the threshold for felony theft. I had a great relationship with the game warden. I did some investigation and told him who I suspected and why. He put some real fear into them for trespassing, felony theft, interfering and tampering with traps of another, and animal cruelty. He delivered the undamaged reds and traps to me the next day.
