Hello everyone, Another question from the questionnaire. What would be some good dimensions on a beginners tent so that I know what to buy at the supply store? I'm trying to make a tent like the one in the link below, but I don't know what is a good size of tarp to use as the cover and what to use as the prop ups. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions Canvas Tent Sincerely, PVT Samuel Davis

Like the others have said, buy a good used one or new. Buy far cheaper and better if done by someone who has made them before.
Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Any suggestions on where to get them? Because I'm not looking for something fancy, just something cheap and functional.

ksnows advice is good. If/when you buy a tent go with a wedge and you will have all time periods applicable to the America's covered. If you buy a tarp now to use as a diamond fly, it will serve you as an awning in front of your wedge later. Stay away from wall tents to save $ and reduce the poles you have to carry and avoid long set-up times.
When I go to rendezvous alone I take the 12x12 canvas tarp to use as a diamond, or my 9x9 oil cloth tarp. When the wife comes too we take a 10x10 wedge and the tarp for an awning. Most folks, us included, started with way too much camp and figured out over time how to take less and still be comfortable.
My recollection is that the Whelen tent design is actually post Civil War, so it is not historically accurate for most rendezvous events, although accepted at many. Don't even think about a tipi if you want to stay married.
