Did the polar bear plunge this morning, it benefits the local food bank. Figured the flintah wouldn't go off today so I went swimming in the river instead. Lol Wasn't as bad as you think.... They had river rescue there just incase, river was up a few feet and muddy. Anybody else take the plunge?

Happy New Year to all of you!!!!

Benefit for the local food bank is a good cause, but I think I'd just write them a check and call it good!

I did for 15 years with Lakeshore Marine Detachment 231 into Lake Erie. Most years we donated all our proceeds to Juvenile Diabetes research. Coldest day was -7F Sadly our Detachment was disbanded and we lost the building for financial reasons. The local fireman's club now does it. This year on January 9th. With last few years of warmth there has been no ice on the lake. Swimming at lake water temps of 40°F is still cold but I miss breaking ice for the swim.

I’m sure I’ll fall duck hunting this year, does that count?

Not me but the younger in family do this with their military buds.
They have great time. Think the location is 3 rivers confluence but I could be wrong.

If Erie was a little closer , it'd be fun to do.

I don't do the swim in water with ice on it thing. At least not on purpose! My daughter did it several years in a row at the mid-winter festival our community has annually called Tip-up Town. It was sub-zero a couple of those years. All she got was a tee-shirt commemorating the event. Brrrrrrrrrrr. A fellow would have two belly buttons when he climbed out of that water.

It sure does and is way riskier than a planned plunge. I remember one year was trapping muskrat and was walking along the river bank and the bank gave way and I was on the bottom of the creek in a flash, thought it was going to be the end as the water was around 10' deep , still remember shining my mag lite up to the surface wondering how I was going to get out of that mess. As luck would have it the current washed me to the shallow side, regained my footing and drained out my waders. I headed back to the truck , but at this time I could not use my hands as I in advanced stages of hypothermia and the air temp was about zero, clothes were freezing up. As luck would have it my buddy seen my truck and was waiting there to see my catch. He opened up my truck and got the heater going I sat in his truck till mine warmed up.

I did it yesterday while pulling beaver traps. Face first in 6" of water. Does that count?

Absolutely stupid!

unless, of course, it begins in the sauna.

I did it on a 4 wheeler in the dark on the Missouri River not by choice. No thanks for a second time.

Did it a couple times mink trapping. Would never do it on purpose.

Did it once on Lake Huron back in January 1983 on purpose. Did it dozens of times trapping and ice fishing on accident. Always cold!

Will take place in my small city on 1/15. Usually gets a good turn out and all the people there cheer eachother on while laughing and having a fun time. I'm getting a little old to purposely jump in a cold river so unless it happens accidentally while trapping, no thanks, I'll just watch.

Guessing you'd need to chop a hole in the ice 160 to jump in ?
