I was planning on using my tax refund to get my fur sent off and tanned,,,, now I gotta buy a vehicle,,,, and that’s going to suck because the used car market being what it is. My wife’s jimmy was already having issues ,,, I thought it was the catalytic converter.. was choking out,,, smell of rotten eggs…. Well,,, the rotten egg smell was gone,,, but still not running right…. It’s been setting for a few months because I didn’t have time to get back to it,,,, I decided yesterday to take it to oreilys and have them run a code on it,,, maybe it’s a coil pack issue… I get in and try to turn it over,,, and I’m hearing a clunky noise,,,, not sure if the blasted thing threw a rod or if the flywheel has came loose some how. By the time I tear into it,,, I’d probably have more invested in it than what a decent used vehicle would probably run.

Crawl under it and see if the starter came loose. If threw a rod the oil light ought to been on when parked it not to mention lost of noise from an unbalanced engine makes a lot of noise and vibration.

Never heard of anything throwing a rod trying to start it! Get a guy sharp about “vechiles” to look at it before you hock the farm for a replacement! It is prolly more simple than you think.

It’s definitely a starter issue of some sorts… I can hear some funky business going on coming from around the starter… I applied some pressure on it with a tire iron while my daughter cranked it. ,, I could def feel vibrations coming from it,,,,, not sure at this point if is a bendix… teeth missing, but I have a starting point at least. Thanks for the suggestion Pete

Hope you get by with a new starter. I would pull it out and can take to Autozone and they can check it. If the armature moves around the bushing in the end could be wore. That will let the teeth not align and can bind it all up.

You can do a lot of fixing for what a “decent used vehicle” costs now.

If it sat a while with ethanol in it that can make it run like crap. Especially if it was low on fuel. I’d check oil too. Lot of cars make crazy noises after sitting a while in cold weather. Even worse if low on oil. May not be as bad as you think. I’m confident the used mkt is way worse than you think. Lol

If going to do it yourself make sure to disconnect the negative from the battery. The starter will have a positive wire that the wrench can contact making for things to get exciting.
