Hi Everyone, I’m looking into different types of breakaways. Someone told me about a breakaway set up where instead of an s hook, the single ferrule that attaches the end of the snare loop to the lock is swagged with a specific pressure so it pops off after the breakaway poundage is met. I looked on a couple of snare sites and couldn’t find this.

Does this exist or did I dream it up? Where would you buy snares like this or where would you buy a swagger that can do that? Any info you all have in this topic thanks s greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Look at the snare shop in IA I believe they carry what your looking for just make sure your tie off end has a greater hold then the breakaway ferrule does. I’d say a double ferrule loop at the stake end would be your friend in most cases, I tried that set up with a regular wire swivel single ferrule and was not impressed with the results.

He's a video I made of a certain type of coyote snare using the release ferrule Jerry mentioned.

Use a J hook type release. Some ferrules don't work on certain types of cable.

The places that sell the release ferrules sell the tool. Pay attention to the directions!

Well If your using 1x19 cable I'm told they don't make a ferrule that Is compatible. I lost 15 coyotes one year because of It so now It's nothing but J hook BADs.

Yes, and you were told that way before you lost 15 coyotes. You were just to stubborn to believe it and switch methods. lol

Actually they do make them for 1/16 & 5/64" 1x19 cable just not the 3/32" 1x19 you use. The OP to this thread won't need to use Cable Restraints in Idaho either, he can use good dispatch snares.

From the BAD testing I have seen done, S hooks and J hooks are way more consistent. From what I saw if you change the lock it can change the break away poundage on the S and J hooks. I have used the ferrule type on 1x19 1/16 and never had a problem with blow outs. I am sure the make of ferrule and cable can make a big difference in how they hold. I bought some snares one year that had J hooks on them and coyotes were blowing the end ferrules off. I figure they used 3/32 ferrules on 5/64s cable. Maybe Beav is getting limp in the wrist with his age.

You have to order by size and cable type

It looks like they make different stops for different size cables now so figure out what your going to use on your line.

Well according to Newt they don't make a ferrule that fits 3/32 1X19 cable. The J hook BADs I have now have a nut crushed on as a stop not a ferrule.

Hey MJM I could have just hammered down the BADs I had but then that would have been illegal.

They make 1x19 release ferrules up to 5/64th. Im assuming you cant go to smaller cable?

Your troubles beav are only specific to states that require cable restraints, not the places where you can use a real snare.

I can agree with ADC. That and to have to use 3/32's is a poor idea at best. 3/32nd makes good extensions. The OP is from ID so I don't think he has to use 3/32nd cable as a cable restraint. From the testing I have seen they don't make BAD ferrules that are consistent. Have you ever stood the BAD ferrules on end and looked at them? On some the hole is centered, others it is off set. That would make a difference in how they crimp on and hold. I am sure if you were to measure them, they are not the same diameter. How much do you think they would need to vary to change the holding power? For years no states tested BADs, most people selling them never tested them. They bought them from someone else and believed what they were told, and the guy telling them never tested them either. I have seen snares with BADs be off 300+ lbs from what the claim of the seller was. Like I said J and S hooks are more consistent. But they may not break at the advertised poundage, depending on how and what they are used with.

The tear away or BAD type systems they just never impressed me I found it easier to go back to a deer stop to be legal here in SD. I do need to try the S and J hook types. My issue was I had thousand of wire swivels so I was not eager to start looping the ends and buying trap swivels to add on to my snares.

I never had luck with the right end of the snare giving way so I stopped using the different setup maybe if the anchor end was looped it would hold more pressure.

The setup your looking for was the release ferrule that was designed to be used on the Amberg snare system that is now sold by John Graham, look up Fur County Lures and you will find both the snares and the components to build snares with that release ferrule.
