Thinking of getting some furs tanned and wanted to know if they have to be fleshed before they were shipped to the tanner, like Moyles for instance or does it just depend on the tanner that you chose?

It will depend on the tannery. Moyles does not accept unfleshed hides/pelts. They must be fleshed/stretched/dried or fleshed/salted/dried. Very few tanneries, especially the larger ones, accept green (unfleshed) pelts.

The reason pelts must be fleshed/dried is that once the pelts arrive at the tannery, it will be weeks, or months, before they are processed. Green pelts will spoil during that time.

You should around with various tanneries to find out their requirements. There is a tannery in Iowa, Sleepyk Creek, that might accept green pelts.

Yep, Sleepy Creek does a great job. USA Fox will slice it up and send it to Moyles for tanning. And charge you extra for their trouble.

You could of had them fleshed by now. Done up right with no worries and saved a few dollars. Better chance of having a good product returned to you. But then you can always blame the tannery if crap is returned and you are unhappy.
