Experience becomes a hindrance when someone thinks there is nothing else to learn. There's always more to learn. That's what makes life worth living.

There is a cure for over confidence... It is called "Old Age". I told someone the other day I was watching "Josie Wales" again. He asked how many times I had seen it over the years... I replied, probably 10 to 15 times. He just looked at me like I was crazy. That could be true, but "Old Age", makes everything new again, because you forget what you saw before.

So that is the same with trapping, maybe you don't forget it all, but some of the little kinks that you worked out, may be so deep seated in all of the memories you have made they have a hard time working their ways to the front of the line. Also, it is enjoyable to come up with other new kinks. We never know it all about anything, no matter what it is...

Now at 4 weeks from being 81 years, I still enjoy learning new things and can't get enough of the TV show 'How It Is Made".

How grand life is... smirk

"At what point does experience become a hindrance ?"

If anything experience has made doing things easier because I have learned how to do something correctly. The only problem I have is when I know better from an experience and still do it incorrectly. Not sure if you would consider it a hindrance but certainly a frustration.

When you think you know it all.
I'm often learning new stuff from people less than half my age.
Some of the stuff I knew before; but then got lazy and forgot it.

I guess, it depends on the individual. Hinderance as in teach-ability or attitude towards others or newbies when you think you can't be taught. Or how you conduct yourself with new trappers and teaching. Trapping shouldnt be so competitive as to not want to help someone else.

Buck minks reply x 2

Now my response. Without starting an argument, I refuse to engage, that is definitely not my intention, I only answer to give you MY best answer, and within your context of " other facets ". In this venue, (t-man), my opinion only, and I know I have a right to my own. I find it becomes a hindrance at about post 999 and when you have about 1 yr. of seniority on another member. Members that think mistakenly or not they have come to a place with like minded individuals. Only to find intolerance and derision. WHERE IS JAMES??? Thanks for asking the question, as well as the place for a response.
Case.

It doesn't so much become a hindrance as it just puts you in the seat of teacher. It gets harder to find relevant new information when you have a lot of experience.

New nuggets come along but they become few and far between.

I could give you a tremendous amount of info on gardening and that info would be based on information I have garnered and failures I have experienced.

You could do the same for me on net making.

The only hindrance I can see is if you give too much info and that person becomes your competition using your ways against you. THEN you get into the "to teach or not to teach" argument. And that is a whole other conversation.

Been my experience,
When I need exp. help, I can get it all over the web. (thanks)
When I need REAL help, physical, mechanical, any,
those same folks are too far away or too busy on the web.

For instance. Anyone good with GM OBD1 codes?
If so grab your scanner and come over, beers cold, coffee is hot. <--- Crickets lol
