short latch. easier to do. works better, set the trap faster and easier. hal sullivan gets irritated with me for saying that but just like a pan tension tester is an unneeded gimmick so is a nite latch

It's a real pain in the butt changing short-latched traps into night-latched traps.

Short-latching doesn't allow you to pull any of the slop out of the dog and pan like night-latching does.

IMO it's just a bad practice.

Reminds me of the show, World's Dumbest. Saw a guy with a set bear trap bet another guy he couldn't snap it without getting caught. The guy said he was faster than the trap and that he could beat the trap.
Needless to say, it was a, "Here, hold my beer" moment. The guy punched the pan and the bear trap was quicker. Even with a lot of beer in the tank, the guy screamed. They never did show how he got out of the trap.

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

absolutely not true

Just think about that for second. A short notch inside a deep notch is still a short notch. crimp the dog eye closed so the dog only moves up and down, not back and forth. put in the correct size pan bolt for the hole. shim it with a washer so pan tension is even. All stuff you OUGHT to be doing with a nite latch. There is absolutely no reason in the world to pull a pan up then down to make it function properly with a correctly tuned trap

Agree with Danny. Close the loop on the dog with pliers like he pictured and then bend the frame in on the dog side.

Easy peezy.

I’ve seen that video, bunch of dumb-arses. The guy that got caught was hollering for them to get it off and his buds couldn’t figure out how. LOL

Me either. I've had too many tripped empty traps to be convinced. I don't think night latching is all that a big of deal either. I can put the dog in a deep notch, and pull the pan down to level without that cool little click. I don't have to mess with the dogs or pan bolts either.

Nite latch is nothing but a short throw dog/pan engagement in the end. Never saw a need for it. Been using this method for many....... years with no problems.

File your pan neck short, notch it slightly with a narrow file and grind the under side of your dog to a point.Crimp your dog loop as needed and bend your dog frame in or out as needed to get level as you like.

if you have pan slop you need to fix that. its part of tuning. even if you nite latch. short latch, nite latch, deep notch, none of them have anything to do with pan slop. the only thing a nite latch does is take longer to set when laying out a line.

You got it Danny. When my trap is engaged for use its always ready to fire. No checking anything. I check all my traps before treating each season for damage or any final tune ups. Then break the wax loose from the pan bolt area or dog as needed before setting.
