I personally have never had any wear out to my knowledge. I have been using some traps over 45 years. It would take considerable friction to wear the steel with wax to boot on them.

Lug, that’s the problem with a night latch or miles trigger, the notch likes to dull off because it’s putting all the pressure that trap can muster on such a small surface. I’m with Bob and Danny on this one!

Lee the surface of the night latch is just as long as the surface of the short notch. I don't see what you're saying.

I've heat treated regular dogs in the past and they held up well
But stainless steel rod dogs don't wear out
