For me and calling coyotes, it has been the best thing since sliced bread.

I'd love to try them but they are priced way out of my price range.

I am betting it comes with a learning curve, at times I can see they are a good thing ,, so how many coyotes if using a call come in and not get seen .?

Takes practice getting used to thermal. On the snow much faster learning curve. Judging distance is the biggest thing to get used to, the new units with a built-in rangefinder are very helpful.

Shooting over baits they really out pace anything out there other than the full moon. I feel I'm seeing everything that gets into 300 yards, thermal gives you instant feedback as to what you see. Where with the red light you have to question deer, coyote, fox, dog etc.

How you set up a stand is still the #1 thing to do right whether it be day or night. Nights with a big moon and snow they will still tend to use cover more than dark nights. 90% of the time they will use the wind to there advantage whether they start circling down wind at 100yds or 600yds. Coyotes being coyotes can still pull the wool over eyes no matter how much money you spend and your level of experience.

For those using thermal, can you distinguish between a wolf vs coyote, other than by size, with thermal?

Body language, big feet if you can see them.

Shooting on western ranches again the thermal is tempting but if I knocked off just one ranch dog no matter who’s I couldn’t excuse myself. In my situation it’s just not worth it.
Not that thermal isn’t an incredible tool.
