Maybe i should not admit this but I may have put a foal its mom would not take care of in one of the bedrooms in a very cold snap years ago. The owner was decided to let it die and it was the only place we had to put it.

I used bed the cows real good for winter, deep straw and the like. Had some sick calves and neighbor came to give a couple shots. He said that barn is where they’re getting sick. They all pile in and get warm, steamy and damp, then head back outside. He said knock it off and even save on the straw bill. I haven’t looked back.

I can't get straw. Just my big round bales . Pile that 2feet deep on the snow. 7x8 area covered inside the 7 x16

As long as the barn is ventilated well enough that you don't get moisture build up you are good. The Amish actually build a chimney type vent up past the roof of the building to get rid of excessive heat and moisture.

330-Trapper Let us know how it goes. The weather should be in you favor for a couple days.

I Sure Will, I'll have the Bull pen / corral retrofitted in a day or two. I don't know exactly when she'll pop... I know a few signs ...but it could be 4 days or two weeks ? Don't know.

Appreciate all the advice.

8 x 16 is over 100 square foot so yes. Don't add 8 foot of length. It would be better to be more square then oblong for ease of movement and care. I would not pen up for weeks. Having that available the cow and calf will determine when they want to stay inside. Keep the wind away and any wet precip during the cols. Worst case for animals is windy, wet, damp days. Many times one can see cows , steers, heifers laying outside chewing their cuds in snow on their backs, that is a good sign that they are very well insulated and holding their body heat. Adding some grain to a good forage diet for the heifer would be helpful during these very cold snaps.

I got the stringers and plywood up on the 8x7 covered area, and the big bale in place on the other end.

Now I have to run half the day , so I'm hoping she doesn't pop until late Thursday or later

I have 3 to 4 hours left before putting her in there.
