I have what is probably a dumb question but I can't get it off my mind. If you have a hound pup bred to hunt rabbits can you train it for coons or will it always want rabbits? Can a coon bred hound be trained to run rabbit or cats or will it always want coons?

You never know what your gonna get. Some beagles can learn to tree, and most coon dogs have to be broke from rabbits. Good breeding means you have a better chance of getting a dog that will do what it is supposed to but it dont always happen. No matter what you get, fido needs trained. You put a beagle in with coon hounds it may well learn to tree. It also may get tore up good by a mad coon and never want anything to do them ever again.

I had a beagle that would tree a squirrel if it came across a hot squirrel track.

A lot also depends on YOU and how much time you are willing to invest in training.

The only way to keep a beagle from trailing something is to never show him a trail. The good thing is you can teach him what you want to trail. Cats, coyotes, rabbits, so on n so on. I have absolutely no idea about coon hounds.

Yes, you can train a beagle to run just about anything that lays a trail. You will have a hard time making it a lock down tree dog though as it's not in there nature.
My brother had one that was a pretty decent squirrel dog but it would only hang around the tree long enough for us to get there then take off to find another one.

Never had a hound, but the best deer blood dog I have had experience with was an Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler). She was my house dog and pet. She could track a wounded deer and she would also run one and bark as long as she was very close, or could see it. If she would have barked when she found a dead deer, she would have been worth thousands. She would find the deer and after a while she would back track until she ran into me, then reverse and take me back to the dead deer.

Had a beagle that would consistantly track pheasant. And surprisingly I think the barking would actually make them hold tight and not flush too early. He could could track wounded pheasant better than any bird dog I had or seen.

Agree 100% lets go dad n get another, and if they take off on a coyote and you are up above and can see it you will laugh your xxx off that coyote will be so far ahead it's like a game to him. And if god forbid a deer, better hope you are up for a walk.

My old dog Smitty (Gray Line Joe of Lots Creek Kennels) got off chain and got with my neighbors Cocker Spaniel caused me quite a problem, but I found them pet homes. 1 I gave to a hunting buddy named him Smoopy, one of the best upland dogs I've ever seen. What ever you shot first that day he would hunt the rest of that day. Rabbit, Pheasant, Quail, Woodcock. Then go retreve it and go look for another. Boy thanks for the memories, that was bout 45 yrs. ago. Sorry to the OP for off topic. I'm done.

No worries, I appreciate a good dog story. I was more curious than anything, my wife would be plenty annoyed if I came home with a hound while I'm already looking for a lab.

I had one that would also. I shot a few squirrel out over her when rabbit hunting and after that she would open up on squirrel also. When around trees if I watched how she followed the track I knew what she was on
She also got excited and got that tail going like she was getting ready to jump a rabbit when she got into quail. That got me ready to shoot a rabbit so when the quail flushed after the suprize i was able to pick one off every now and then.

Best hound I will ever have she never ran a deer. I got lucky there. We had a fresh snow and she was right beside me when saw her stick her nose into fresh deer tracks and that tail started going. I smacked her across the hind end and said no before she opened up. Her tail went between her legs and she stoped. Then I put her on a rabbit track and she was off. She got hit by a car running a rabbit when she was 7 years old. I will never have another one like her. I was 14 when I got that pup and she was a once in a life time hound.

My grandad had a black & tan that would hunt rabbits in daylight and coons at night. My English hound would tree squirrel if I took him out squirrel hunting other wise he was all coon hound. My BMC tree's coons squirrel and cats and trails rabbit and decoys coyote she'll hunt mice and kill them as well as rats. She kills possum but only if we come across them she don't hunt or trail them.
