Merry Christmas, Aix.

Harold, Iíd say thatís pretty unusual. Iíve seen that happen in ponds where there isnít anywhere to go. Even in the mountains when beavers have reached their limit on how far up they can go. They almost always start a new autonomous colony.

It got even stranger this morning with a 56 lb female in a drowning set. That is 3 45+ lb. females from this location and zero sign of fighting. 8 total and only 2 30 lbs or less.

This is a small creek with a well maintained dam and one bank den.

Harold I think it happens in the south more. I had a 20 ac??? pond with 3 active lodges. One big lodge and two smaller. I think it was the older adults and their off spring not beaver from outside the family. I had another spot with four lodges. All were active and I could see all four at one spot. This was a narrow heavy wooded swamp, you could not see to far. I just finished a site where I caught four big beaver in the same spot and none of their tail were scared up.

The pole set was untouched, and the baited 330 was sprung.

New trapper question? The 330 conibear traps have two indents on the dog. Why? I know one creates a tighter closed trap. I also know they sell magnum 330ís which supposedly close the trap. Curious why there are two set points and what effect it has on triggering

Good question Handy. I hope I have it right, but it has always been my experience that it is a way to adjust the sensitivity of the triggers. The outside notch takes less force to trigger.

The inside notch can be filed to trigger hard-in case you want to set in current. The outside notch can be filed to go on a hair trigger for different application.

If it has a baculum, itís a male. If you pinch the fur between where their castors would be, you can usually tell without pelting.

Once you open them up, youíll just have to feel around. Either itís there or it isnít.
