Experience is never a hinderance, as long as it’s applied as a part of growth. In the spirit of keeping it simple, it wouldn’t be the experience that’s the hinderance, but rather a person unwilling to accept that there’s always more to experience and learn from.

Proven, standard methods work until they don’t. For someone catching fur, they can use proven methods and move on. For someone after specific animals or conditions that become problematic for whatever reason, This is where someone either moves on or digs in. The ones that dig in tend to have creative moves to play, and that’s where innovation comes in. Change up sets, improvised equipment, revolutionary methods, and so on. This is where an industry continues growth. Every industry.

The way I see it.

I think I gain experience every season I trap. Not only I learn a little more but see different things. Animals are like people, not everyone is the same.

Experience plus hinderance

equal

Non sequitur or incongruent

Since Jonathan and his vast experience is no longer with us; I decided to throw in a few big words.

It's only a hindrance when you have a "once in a life time experience" and keep expecting you can repeat it !

Some of y'all aren't getting the question it seems. I'm not asking nor say experience in it's self is a hindrance. I'm asking at what point does it become one. And it most certainly can be.

I knew an older teacher that couldn't get a teaching job because she was over educated and over experienced for the job even though she was willing to take a cut in pay for the lesser job. Always wondered if it was that her experience was a hindrance or if that was just a polite way of telling her she was too old.

Could be, but some potential employers might think that she would bolt for a better paying job

Do you have 25 years of doing something, with 1 year of experience and 24 years of doing the same thing or do you have 25 years of real experience? If it were me I would ask questions or seek thoughts and insights who have experience in similar habits, or skill sets I have or want to improve. I don't need to get a lot better at things I most likely will never do.

Well i think if we look at what most people consider stagnant then we would have to rethink that. How many times have you seen somone come up with something new , a set a traps a device ect and you automatically see 5,10,20 people say " well I've always done ABC and it's worked I see no need to change". I feel that could be considered stagnation and in that case their experience is a hiderance . Mabye that set or what have you could have gotten them extra animals or made life easier in some capacity but their experience if success with just using say rebar stake mb450s at a dirt hole clouds that judgment..
But their really isn't any right or wrong answer to this

In that case I don't think it's their experience that's a hindrance. It's their close mindedness. The people that are really good at what they do have tons of experience, and yet never stop learning because they keep an open mind. The people who say "I've always done it this way and see no reason to change" have either A) already tried a similar idea/product and found it doesn't work or B) Would have said the same thing their second year of trapping because that's just their personality... that's not CAUSED by experience.

My experience says when you try something new trapping related, lure, trap whatever, don't jump in whole hog. You know how effective what your already doing is. The new thing might not be as effective. Try it on a small scale. Don't make the mistake of going to old reliable in that "shooting fish in a barrel " situation either. If you do your not testing the new thing in a real fashion. Sometimes the latest greatest everyone get on board will cost you fur. Sometimes the tip from the other guy does work but it doesn't fit your style or isnt as effective as you think your old way is. So like I said dont just jump in whole hog. That goes for anything really. IMO for whatever thats worth

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Maybe some of us don't understand the question you think you are asking. A hinderance to what, then???

Let's try this:

Let's say I am on some forum. No,no,no, not Trapperman; some other forum. I am trying to explain how phrasing a question a certain way might imply something that wasn't true. Say, like:
  • Are you still beating your wife?
  • When is the best time to euthanize a loved one.
  • How can I catch more coyotes with my 1 1/2 Dukes?
Try as hard as i can, over and over and over. Nobody gets it.

OK, maybe that experience might hinder me from posting on that site.

Is that what you are asking?
