Found a recipe that calls for a small amount of Ammonia. Isn’t that alkaline and have a negative affect on it?

Sounds like the oil for breaking the hide after tanning?

I don't know of any recipe calling for ammonia. I use rittels pro plus oil with good success if you want an alternative.

Is the hide tanned already?

Neats foot oil is usually for breaking. I'm no Tanning guru but have tanned several pelts with rittels ez 100.

Looks like you got that off some page on the internet posted by some hippie that mixed a few things together and at the end of a huge process was able to keep the hair intact of a hide and called it tanned.

The ammonia was probably used as a bactericide which would be pointless to use by that point of the tanning process.

I have used a BASF product that had a definite ammonia smell. The smell dissipates fast-It was a stuffing oil not a tanning agent. It worked very well.
Mix it up and use it as a stuffing oil after tanning.
Ammonia is slightly alkali-it wont harm a tanned skin-in fact it will likelu neutralize any acid remaining in the leather and prevent acid rot

After seeing some of your work, I’ll give it a go on your experience.

I gave it ago and it is working out nicely. I mixed it up in a spray bottle and have completed multiple applications.
