Going to break out the spear if we get decent ice soon. Thinking about replacing the rope……kind of rope you guys recommend. …….kind of looks like a cotton or cotton blend on it now.
What do you guys use and or recommend ??

Appreciate it. See if I can find some 550
That’s a nice bunch of pike. We have enough ice now so won’t be long now…

Question from a flat lander. What is the process of spear fishing pike or any fish like that? Is it like ice fishing? Interesting thanks

Pawnee, you cut a hole approximately 2’ x 3’ . Hang a decoy or a live shiner or a sucker….. sit in a shanty as dark as possible. Just like sitting on top of an aquarium. Sometimes pike come in slow and sometimes like a torpedo !! Try to hit them right behind the head where it joins the back.
Some of you guys will appreciate this some won’t. Our spear is probably 100 years old or so….. decoys were carved by my grandfather around 45 years ago.

There have been few folks try to get dark house spearing for pike here in WI legal. Think even Moosetrots in on that???? Not sure why but from what I heard.. It's majority fisherman outdoor people them selves don't like the idea. I'm pretty sure I'd try it if could. They do the sturgeon spearing thing here people go in droves. My guess is the musky crowd is afraid they be killing to many Musky by mistake? So the pike spearing thing gets poop pooped. Kinda how bass fisherman hate guys fishing bass threw ice with tip-ups.. oh almost forgot... When I used to throw my one short carp spear from the canoe. I just used light poly rope. That was back in old days haven't done that for years shoot bow now. But I think if I was going throw the old spear now get me some para-cord some kind.. My days of standing in front canoe throw spear done gone..

I use 550 paracord on my pike spear. I spear in 8 to 10 foot water, always exciting when the muskrats pop into the shanty and bounce around! Don't stick your foot trying to hit the muskrat!! Egg shells or sliced raw potatoes on the bottom helps. My decoys are 1 foot long to size up pike, they have to be 24 inches here.
