I'm a long way from Iowa but I can tell you I haven't sold a coon in four years now because I know that when a lake is only an inch or two from going over the top of a dam it only takes a small amount of rain to cause a flood.

I am killing a FEW coyotes cause they need killing. Thinking real serious about having a bon fire whiskey drinking party this spring. I have pelted the good ones but the pelts are in the freezer. Dont know if i want to bother with fleshing and stretching yet. If a coyote hat at Cabela's can still fetch 600 bucks, people your giving your skins too ARE making money off your efforts.

Its time to QUIT giving fur away. I didnt say quit trapping. Just dont give it away. Use it yourself, gift it to friends, toss it in the ditch, but dont put it in the commercial pipeline.

And besides that, itís a fun sport. A youngster will never learn more about the out of doors anywhere else then they do on the trapline.

He said in an earlier post that he had quit. So no, he hasn't sold at the auction.

No one on here has said to quit or not pass on the tradition. Just to stop giving away our hard earned fur. Critters will always need to be trapped.

Question guys...what if the end buyer (Groenewold, Petska, Wiebke, Zander) that supplies the customer, sets the price, and tells the customer, "I can't sell you fur for the price you want to pay, because my suppliers (trappers) won't catch them for that." Are we afraid that customer(s) will say "fine, we'll find an alternative material". Is this a possible outcome we're scared of? How long are you willing to bust your hump, skin and flesh, for a $4.00 avg on coon when gas is $3/gal? Buyers have balls the size of church bells that get on these websites and tell us "we need coon", but we can only pay $4-$6 for finished coon. There's a demand guys.

These type of markets are the hardest on country buyers, I consider mine a friend and I would hate to be in his shoes these past few years. He is a heckuva guy, but does other work to get by. I am happy for him the few years he sticks his neck out and does well, Iím guessing most years he isnít vacationing in France once the fur is all shipped out. The big boys on the other hand, have some leverage and play the game I believe. Get this sickness done with and open up the markets and letís see what happens. Canada, unfortunately has to lead the way for this to happen evidently, with the last big North American auctions being there.

Hate to tell you this Danny the sports are not going to quit supplying the market at any price. That is just the way it is.

I wish just for once trappers would set the price and not catch or sell one pelt unless it was a reasonable price. I can totally understand different sections and grades but its just wrong the final product is making money and everyone down the line accept for the producer of fur.

I understand what you are saying and where you want to go with this. But how would you get those buyers to toe the line?

There is NOT a demand!!
Most of us remember when there was a demand. The tiny dab of coon that are being harvested and actually entering the fur market is such a tiny amount compared to when there was ďdemandĒ. 10 years ago this season I knew of 10,000 coon caught in the county that I live. Thatís just the guys that I knew. Certainly there were more. I guarantee that there wonít be 200 coon enter the fur market from the same county.
When many buyers/dealers advertise that they donít want coon, thereís no demand.
Iím normally an optimist, but itís getting harder and harder to be optimistic about the wild fur market.

The guys you mention are buyers and sellers, not the end buyers.

Joe - I have been trying to remember if we have ever met, but I don't think so. Anyway, I hope you can sell what you're holding in your freezers for a good price some day.

So we quit selling them fur and they go out of business. That will fix the fur market?

If you say , to you, the fur is about business, about money....... what is your business model if you are sitting on fur in freezers ? How long will you chase bad money with good ? How long will you pay for the energy cost to hold your hides for another year? How much does the market have to recover for it to be a wise decision? What business model will prove this was a good decision? The best would be to cut your lossís and either burn them or sell them. Fur is a renewable resource, your not holding on to gemstones.

"Around 1550, the "Beaver Era" started and would last for about 300 years."

I hope to see one of these 300 year runs again. Be lucky to get a 3 year. smile
