Anyone ever catch them in KS? I know there are some around so why not give it a shot. This is my first ever attempt at trying to catch one. I've been watching a few videos and yesterday I finally had enough. So, I went to town and bought a half dozen rat traps. Tried to get some liver for bait but the store hasn't had any for a long time I guess. Keep looking. For now, just used some meat out of the freezer. This morning I went out and set 5 of them, the other one wouldn't stay set so that one needs a little work, maybe make up some of those pull type triggers. Anyways, below are my 5 locations I chose today. Not sure what to expect (hoping this is not a complete waste of time) but set what I thought was the best weasel type spots I could find. I don't have any boxes, so just wired them to trees. Any suggestions on locations, bait, lure, etc. is welcomed!

This first spot there is a cattail slough on the left side of the cedar tree and a big rock pile to the right.
[Linked Image]
Second spot, set on a side hill full of cedars, slough on the bottom.
[Linked Image]
Third, set on the edge of a ditch coming out of the slough leading to a waterway.
[Linked Image]
Fourth, set on the edge of the waterway, undercut banks, downed trees, big thick patch of phragmites to the right.
[Linked Image]
Last one, set up on the cedar, next to a downed tree, big exposed root ball, lots of brush.

This one is just a larger view of the last, you can see the downed tree and brush and where the trap is located.

Good Luck, Mike. Keep us posted on your catch results. When I was a few years younger (50 years ago) I caught decent numbers of long-tailed weasels with the same set-up you're using. Now, here in Idaho, that set-up is not legal because of the exposed bait, which, remembering back, it indeed caught more birds than weasels.

From the few that I have caught I would say the third picture set is the one on the best location. They love hunting in the high weeds and brush piles.

I don't know KS laws I would put some broughs above the rat trap to hide the exposed bait that will cut down any magpie etc.nothing 100% ,I 've caught 1 magpie using the method stated above.Good luck never caught a long tail up here I have seen 2 long tail tracks in 43 years of trapping, most years there are a fair amount of short tails, pretty easy to catch 20 or more.110 miles south east of here there was a trapper Jack Pine Savage deceased would catch 100 to 300 maybe even more some years.Always fun to trap a few.

A couple years ago I built a couple weasel boxes but have yet to put them out. I had the same thought as you, I know there's weasels in the state but not sure how common they are. Every now and then you hear about somebody's cat dragging one to the house. My thought was to put some sets out at old farmsteads with rock piles and brush piles around. Let us know how you do, it never hurts to try!

I took some of your advice as far as the birds go and went back out and brushed them in good to help avoid that. Forgot to mention, as far as luring, I just used a couple things I already had. Kansas Trapline Products- Final Destination and O'Gormans long distance call. We'll see what happens now. Added a few bobcat snares while I was out as well. Appreciate everyone's advice. Mike

Check out any of the culvers where there is swamp grass or cat tails. They love the culvers and thick brush where there are rabbits.

If they like rabbits, they ought to be thick around my house! I have seen weasel tracks in new snow in Wy, but never could get in front of one. Here in Ks, I have always kept my eye out for them, but as yet, have yet to ever cut a track. Kinda gave up looking for them!

I built and set several weasel boxes probably 6-7 years ago. I set in cattails and culverts and never caught one. I’m glad to hear Larry caught one as I live in the area. I saw one run across the road in front of me 1/2 mile from town probably 50 years ago. The only one I had heard of being caught was around Yates Center years ago and that’s 90 miles way. I still have the boxes and traps, might need to try again,I sure would like to catch one.

Yates Center is getting fairly close to me, I've never seen one here. I think something like that could be fun for a change!

Put a #2 or 1 1/2 in front of them. All sorts of other critters will come to investigate you set. the first set seems to have a trail going right by it. Put some sets right in the brush and culvers are great too.......jk

I have never found weasel sign here. Dont know anyone that has caught one in KS either. I hope you find one. If you do you might want to get it taxidermyed.

I also live in SE Ks. (Fredonia) I have seen 2 in my lifetime. 1 a buddy caught in a steel trap probably 15 years ago and the other a neighbor's dog carried it up in the yard in July at least 10 to 12years ago. Both have been mounted.
