Well as one of the guys that still goes out and attempts to catch a decent numbers of coon I guess I'll speak my peace.
The demand isn't there like it use to be, with politics, covid in China, etc. Ya there are a few larger buyers with orders. But overall china's lock down is really hurting it. Even if we had yearly harvest of 1 million coon, it's far below what was produces not all that many years ago. Nafa shutting down hurt things alot. Although alot of fur never saw the auction house it was a place where markets could be set, within reason.
Its to bad that money seems to be the only reason many people trap, I live to trap, and will do it until I can't anymore, or it becomes illegal, which with everybody dropping out of the game, and we have fewer and fewer people getting into the sport, may not be very long from now. I get it that people want compensated foe their work, but does anybody just love being outdoors and trapping anymore? I know I do, and I've put forth alot of work in the off-season to make sure that I will definitely come out in the black once all my markets have been capitalized on.
Whether we trap 10 animals, 50, or 2000 furs a year, If we give it up and don't take the time to teach the sport to ANYBODY that shows interest, we are doomed.

For those of you talking "Hold the line, don't sell cheap" Tell the fur buyer what you want, and watch him laugh. The reason the price is so low and grade is so tight is because there is no demand. When big buyers says they don't want coon it means there is no demand. Demand will not go up raising the price, even if you could.

Are the people buying it doing it cause they love to buy? You can trap without putting your catch into an already backed up pipeline.

Where will demand come from? Serious question. Well when the antis crushed the market in the late 80s. Some creative folks with interest in fur started to introduce it to emerging markets of Asia. Unfortunately that ship has sailed

In 2013 31 rubles would buy dollar. In 2015 till now 60 to 80 rubles will buy a dollar. Their economy has been poor since the sanctions. They have no money and the price of hats more than doubled.

There is NOT a demand!! Most of us remember when there was a demand. The tiny dab of coon that are being harvested and actually entering the fur market is such a tiny amount compared to when there was “demand”. 10 years ago this season I knew of 10,000 coon caught in the county that I live. That’s just the guys that I knew. Certainly there were more. I guarantee that there won’t be 200 coon enter the fur market from the same county. When many buyers/dealers advertise that they don’t want coon, there’s no demand. I’m normally an optimist, but it’s getting harder and harder to be optimistic about the wild fur market. No demand? So Trevor Barnes is driving from Michigan to your place in Northern Missouri in early March to have some beans and shoot the sh$$?

Iowa coon bringing what Alabama coon have brought since the '90's. Means an Alabama coon might bring .50 cents.
Russia use to be the main buyer of coon for jackets/work coats. Doubt our relation's with them is going to get better anytime soon.

I don't think anybody here is suggesting" holding the line don't sell cheap" I think what they are saying is find out before the season from the furbuyer what he will be paying and if he tells you some ridiculously low price, you laugh in his face or on the phone and go find something more productive to do. At least that's what I do. The fur industry does not interest me, unless I'm earning a living. I also believe in the law of supply. P.S. I agree with kinley31. You are doomed.

When the day comes that you click on Groenewold's website, and they are running ZERO routes, in ZERO states and only buying at their Illinois facility, then I'll believe there's no demand.

Kinley31, just curious, where is the demand ? Do you suppose it’s just small specialty markets in the USA ? Or are you suggesting that a lot of fur is being sold over seas that we don’t know about ? Do you think it’s clothing or craft market? Those are great questions Kong.
