In the market for a compact tractor to do small hobby farm, landscaping, food plot, and snow removal type things. Any suggestions on what to look for and what to stay away from. Accessories will be a rototiller, landscape rake, bucket, and cheap cultipacker. It may be used to work up food plots as a little side gig nearing retirement.

I have heard bad about the LS tractors but have never been around one.

Also I’ve seen some have sales or promotions has anyone taken advantage?

TIA !

The New Holland tractors are pretty nice. I have one its older but still works great. One thought is what dealerships for what brand do you have close to you so your are not driving hours for parts if ever needed..

Closest dealer is Massey Ferguson about 5 miles. Everything else is going to be 45 miles plus. They only had 1 on the lot it was nice but out of my price range.

Look for a low hours Kubota L3800, doesnt have computer and regen requirements, great tractor. Or a low hours L3900, which has the computer and regen system. I use my 3800 for everything you listed and its been solid.

Kubota.

I've had my L35 for twenty-plus years and it's been used hard for my business and for personal use. It has a BT900 backhoe attachment that can dig to nine feet. It's an incredibly useful, versatile and durable machine. If the new Bota's are anything like the older ones then that's what you should buy.

Eh...wot?

I bought a Ford diesel with Japanese engine. So far so good.
I still need a couple extras for it.
Close dealer IS handy.

Go with the Massey. You will need parts if you work a piece of equipment. Most modern equipment is all pretty reliable. I get it, some new stuff does have a gremlin or two when first released, but overall they’re fairly close in quality. Parts and customer service do differ and 5 miles is dang close if ya like the dealer. Full time farmer here and parts and repair are just part of it. And if ya get a good relationship going with the dealer they’ll open up on a Sunday to get ya what ya need. Buddy has a Massey and uses it dang near ever day. Hauls logs, mows yard, moves snow, digs stumps. I ain’t seen it broke down in 3 yrs he’s had it.

I would got with the Massey because of the dealer being that close. I run a 35hp Yanmar myself and really like it. I use it for everything you describe and then some.

Stay away from the grey market tractors. Hard to find parts for them. If you can't find a parts or repair manual for them you can't get parts.

X2, my 3710 is worth more now than when I purchased it.

This past year I went through the whole decision making process on a compact tractor. I ended up with a new Kubota B2601. I bought it with a front end loader and a backhoe. I am extremely happy with tractor. It does everything I need. I use it for a lot of the same reasons you listed. For me it came down to Kioti, John Deere and Kubota. The kioti didnt offer a mid PTO, that was an extra cost, nice tractor though. John Deere, I didnt like the foot pedals, I kept hitting both. Kubota checked all the boxes. This was also based on local dealers

I agree entirely. My New Holland is a TC-40 bought in 2003. I love it. The dealer was 45 min away but I never needed them. Bought most of my consumable parts (oil filters, air filters, etc) from Messicks on-line. It was far less expensive than a JD and every bit as good IMO. Put a front end loader on it and wished I had done that sooner.

This has not been my experience. My experience has been high cost, poor reliability, horrible service. But we have 2 dealers within a 40 min drive. Also have a relative who works for Deere, he and his family have a farm. They used to run Deere. Now they have switched to Massey.

Ps this is coming from someone who runs a Deere 7-8 hours a day.

Personally run the absolute mess out of my L2501, no DEF, or DPF to deal with. "Technically" under the HP limit for emissions, but I think the tractor makes more, does everything I need it to. However with a Massey dealer that close, I would opt for a comparable model since the dealer is so close. My dealer is about 2 miles away and is a Kubota, I had another Kubota before this, had so many miles too.
