I always thought it was oil that ran off the roads but over the years I've seen that same slick far from any roads so really can't be sure.

I could be lots of things other than oil..Remember a single soap bubble gets the same sheen..

i figured when it seeps up like that , all the broken down leaves must have had some oil to them. the leaf breaks down but the oil remains

hemp ,corn, rape, soy, sesame, olive , sunflower are high oil content but lots of things must have some oil to them.

i tried to cold dye some traps one time. Was told green walnuts hull and all would dye traps without boiling if you soaked em in it several days. after 4-5 days that water got that oily look and traps had more rust. a real red looking rust. I think that oily look is from leaves that are in non moving water
