tree has good points re the ferry system. It’s expensive but still kinda like a poor man’s cruise. You would have to make the connection between SE and PWS (outside waters) to avoid driving into Canada. Myself I would either ship my handgun or purchase one here, as others have suggested.

I have driven up to Alaska with a rifle and ended up shipping it back.

If you do choose to travel through with a firearm, budget some extra time for the border crossing while they get the paperwork figured out. They also hassled me a bit for poor wording on my part- make it very clear the reason you are visiting Canada is to get to Alaska.

Shipping the firearm was much easier than I expected. I think it cost me $50 or so.

Stay out of the largest city close to Alaska and won’t need protection.

Could a US citizen mail or ship a handgun to themselves at an Alaskan address, or must the handgun be shipped by a licensed dealer to another licensed dealer?

Seniortrapper you also have to have a Clean Record to drive into Canada. Many folks don't realize that a DUI is consider a criminal in Canada illregardless of the time back. They ask you if you have been finger printed- anytime as you pass into customs. They have records going back 50 years+. After 6 years you can get DUI these sealed but it takes time with lawyers.
Trigger locks are also required in Canada so be prepared. Paper work and itemize all the ammo you are carrying and keep the paper work for the return,
Going across USA then passing into Alberta you will get less questions than going through Ontario and across...... but if you want to pay 2$ a litre for fuel

If I am not mistaken, it is not legal to buy a handgun from a dealer in a state that you are not a resident in. It may be legal to buy from a private citizen there. Call the State Troopers there AND here to verify. I nearly got my own teat (both of them!) in the wringer 30 plus years ago doing that....but Michigan's handgun buying paperwork is more streamlined nowadays, at least if you have a CPL.

Some misleading suggestions in this thread.
1. You cannot mail a handgun period.....unless you are an FFL holder. Neither can you buy a handgun in AK if you are not a resident. A long gun you can buy.
2. You CAN legally mail a long gun to yourself c/o your relative in Wasilla.
3. You can legally take a handgun or a long gun onto a ferry in the AMHS. It must be in a lockable space in the vehicle. Ammo must be locked elsewhere. Must declare firearms to the ship master.
4 You can walk onto the ferry with a declared firearm and surrender it/them to the ship master.

If I were you, I would forget Canada. You won't miss a thing there. Forget the ferry. It is very scenic but quite expensive especially with a vehicle.

Fly into Anchorage with any guns you want in checked baggage. Rent a car and get out of Anchorage. Better yet, fly into Fairbanks and avoid Anchorage as much as you can.
Return home the same way.

Least expensive probably and least hassles with firearms

I took a shotgun when we went there. You pay to carry it in they write down the serial # and when you leave they check that it matches.

You can have your ffl dealer ship to an ffl dealer in Alaska.

Bring plenty of ammo. This one needs a couple more holes.
