Anything by Peter Hathaway Capstick or Jim Corbett. Russell Annabel is a fantastic writer of his life in Alaska, but he's been known to stretch things a little. Great reading none the less.
I have dozens of mountain man history books, mostly journals, hard to pick a favorite.
Just read the book 1846, year of decision. Pretty amazing history of one of the most incredible seminal years in the history of the western United States.
Another recent book that was good was Give your heart to the Hawks. It's about mountain men, but has more good info and first hand accounts of western Indian tribe customs that any other book of the sort. Especially about their sexual customs and relationships of squaws and mountain men. Pretty bizarre stuff actually, the way women were bought and sold and traded.
Men to match the mountains was one I read this summer. pretty good history of the west.
A couple Wayne Negus books come to mind.
Someone on here recommended Mink, Mary and me, which I bought the other day and I'm almost finished with it. Enjoyable.
I could go on and on. Yes! The Maneaters of Kumaon is a really good read, by Jim Corbett, my favorite story in it is The Leopard of Rudraprayag. Also Capstick’s Death in the Long Grass is a very good book
