a house isn't worth all that much, your childhood home is priceless, lost mine for really no good reason other than stubbornness, still haunts me to this day.

If its for a better life of course, I wouldn't want our children to hold on to land or things if they could use the monies for there dreams and a better life.

Not to be or sound cliche, but money doesn't get you a better life generally. I am not talking about the person who has struggled to obtain basic necessities all their life then falls into some money that lets them live comfortably. I am talking about the people who are low to middle income who dream of winning the lottery thinking that it would change everything, the reality is that it wont change that much. Great the bills are paid now what? You want to fly around the world and go to a bunch of different countries, ok we can do that in a few months probably somewhere around 20k, now what?

The bottom line here is that money is just like a vehicle, a gun, a house, food, having a ton of it doesn't just give you a better life. You still wake up the same, you still eat the same, This doesn't apply if you struggle for food, and if thats the case PM me, I will send food.

I am not sure because I believe some of my best life was on the land that was given to me.

What if it were just straight up grain land?

Would you sell it and buy recreational property for remaining family to enjoy hunting and trapping on?

Currently dealing with this situation...not inheritance, but long standing family land. I'm gonna do all I can to keep it in MY FAMILY! May seem moot to some of you, but round here, it's a standard that most live by.

Never inherited anything. Have sold a lot of things I wished I hadnt but sometimes you have no choice.

I'm trying to buy my parents place, the farm I grew up on. Land here is very expensive and I may kill myself working to try and afford it but ill try.

If someone could post corb Lund song S lazy H please YouTube link it, its my worse fear and why I'm trying to buy this place now.

What is a better life? Generally I would say no to the question.

Don't wait until you're dead to pass on a piece of land.

If you hang on to it, and you happen to get to the point where you need Medicaid they will make you spend everything you have before providing any assistance, and no, you can't just give it away really quick at that point. They will go back 5 years and demand blood.

If you pass on property before you die at least you can sort of guide the direction it goes. Plus, you get the enjoyment out of seeing someone else use the property. There are ways to structure trusts and other conveyances that help insure your desires are followed.

I gave away some property a couple of years ago. It has given me a lot of pleasure watching people having a good time using the property. [Linked Image]

Part of the reason my divorce hit me so hard is because I had saved carefully for years to buy the farm, all that money was wiped out and I thought ide lost it forever.

My brother and I wish we had bought more land but pieces we would have sold. Our core piece if we sold we would be millionaires. We like our life and like our land. Hunt and trap to our hearts content. Good deer, bear, turkey. Were good.
PS our wives love it also.

Absolutely. I bought my farm, not family land. Have sacrificed blood, sweat, and hundreds of thousands of dollars to make this place a home. Have 155 acres. House is 7 tenths of a mile from the road. I tell people all the time that it cost a fortune to live this poor. Lol. I have 2 daughters that I would not trade for anything in this world. Unfortunately if something happened to me my family would spend everything trying to keep this place up because they would have to hire help.
My wife's instructions for when I die is to call a real estate agent first and then call the funeral home. Just turned 50 and one heart attack deep. Always wanted to die here but reality is kicking in.

It depends. Better life for ME, or for the land?

Seen quite a few family ranches get sold in CO late 70's and into the 80's. The land got to valuable. Guys were selling out in CO and buying land in TX NM AZ WY so could keep ranching. Many just retired. I noticed hardly any who sold out to retire or work a job for wages, stayed close. I have always thought the reason for that was regret.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)
