Ok I have a couple of situations where roads cross and it looks like several coyotes at different times are marking and pawing the road right at the crossing. All flat nothing for backing. How should y’all setup on sign like this? Pawed up area is about 3ft sq and really pawed up in both locations.

Move something in for a backing . Transplant a scent post. Step down dirt hole which when constructed forms it's own backing . Your only limited by your imagination.

I was afraid of making a set "wrong " and educating coyotes when I first started trapping. Most of my sets now are combinations of different sets made up on the spot to adapt to the circumstances.

Make flat sets, coyotes work them longer and harder.

I don't have too much luck if I move something new into an area as an attractant or backing. As mentioned step down dirtholes do a good job guiding when no backing is available but won't catch all of them. Let the wind be your guiding and use 2 traps if think you need to.

Multiple traps around the hole, no backing needed

I was thinking of driving in a 1” dia pvc pipe almost flush with the ground and add my attractant and a trap on each side. Flat as a pancake with nothing added. Let them circle that pipe a few times trying to figure out how to get the goods out.

Make your own kick back set with some droppings from another pack and use good urine well blended flat sets also.
