They are the ones hanging out by themselves on the ground instead of flying up in the trees. When I clean the snow off under the feeder, seed gets thrown out farther and that is what they go after most of the time.

Good photo. Do they eat seed, or just suet/meat and berries ? Sharon, that bird was 30 feet away through a half fogged up kitchen window with my phone. I can't believe the camera and zoom on this thing.

Have not noticed them at the feeder before, but we have not been dumped on like this in years. Haven’t seen one of those in years, they were always a favorite of mine, and one of the summer rituals was looking for their nests in the field behind our house that field was the only place I ever seen them as a kid and I roamed called over the area as a kid trapping gophers ect Glad to know they are doing well somewhere

Many of the sub-species of Horned Lark can be identified by their front bib/chin colour looks like yours in a NE race male. One of the field seed eaters that is in real decline on the Breeding Bird surveys I use to do one in sw Manitoba that had 48 of 50 stops with Horned larks, unfortunately now there is only 8-10 stops with them detected ( different bias cant be that different in observers) the decline started the same time as treated neonicotinoid seed for Canola started I put my farm into wildlife habitat and planted 35 acres of warm season grass and clovers. So maybe that is why they are here.

Flipper do you hear any overhead territorial songs now from the males ? Sure sign of spring on the prairies where I live, most of our local birds travel south to about Law Dogs territory then come back about now. Too much snow and blizzards this year so the bare ground is not exposed yet.

I have not noticed these Larks before the last day or so with this big snow. I don't know what their call sounds like. Have not been outside other that to tend to the feeder. I will be out today plowing snow for sure. Fun to watch these little guys digging a hole looking for seeds then they get in it to keep another from getting their new stash. They kind of waddle on the snow, short fat puff balls.
