Made 2 hickory nut pies for tomorrow's dinner. Took me 6 hours to crack and pick out 4 cups of hickory nut meat (I now have a new appreciation for squirrels that can clean out a hickory nut thru a small hole in the shell). At $15 dollars an hour that is $45.00 per pie. Made walnut brownies for the younger grandchildren as they waste too much pie!!
Oh yea, I caught a coyote with the mange today but I am not puttin' his picture by these food pictures.

Those look great. My grandpa used to crack hickory nuts while watching football games, after grandma was gone.

They are a negative calorie food. Takes more calories to get them open than you get eating them.

I can remember smashing hickory nuts with a hammer out in the woods at my favorite childhood home, good memory. I’ll bet they make a good pie.

I know your struggle, I use the ole #4 hammer to slowly crack them apart and pick. I dont know how the ole squirrels are so efficient.

Eric, the pies look great. You need to invest in a G. Gardner Master Nut Cracker. I have one and it works great on hickory nuts and black walnuts. You can literally crack the nuts, using the nut cracker, with just your little finger.

I use a Foley walnut cracker. Not quite as fancy as Keith's. But it still works great.

Dang looks good.
Is $15 entry level pay for nut crackers or are you at top pay grade LOL..
I bet you could get $45-50 for them pies in right market. Label them as organic or some fancy designer name.

simple nut cracker: take two 2x6s four foot long, lay one down in driveway, put nuts on top of board laying on driveway, lay other 2x6 4 foot long on top.
Start truck engine, line up one set of wheels on board covering nuts, proceed over board with front and back tire .
Get out truck pick up board covering cracked nuts, sweep into pail, take in house and put nuts in jar ! Bon Appetite !!!!
