Energy, like everything else in this world is supply and demand. When the President deliberately decreases supply (pipeline, exploration, etc) Demand and prices go up.

You guys must all have electric heat? Man get a wood stove, it would pay for itself in no time at all. Even if you had to buy the firewood you would re-coup your investment in no time. Like many here, I've been heating my home with wood since '87 and basically have never had a heating bill. I do have a propane furnace I do run on occasion in the fall and spring when its too warm to fire up the stove. Its been a cold winter here in Minnesota, I can't imagine not having wood heat. The past few mornings I wake up to the entire house at 82 degrees and -10 to -20F outside.

How many more kilowatts did you use this January than in other years? Was the temperature warmer or colder this year over other years? Did your electric supplier raise their rates? Are you heating the same square footage as you always have? What is your price of electricity? When was house built? Do you have double or triple pane windows? Does your electric company do energy audits?

How much of your bill can be attributed to the heat?

So many factors to figure.

Around here all season patio rooms are uninsulated. Surely you are not heating yours.

Same house no changes. The difference between an ALL season room and a sun room is it's insulated. PLUS the ALL season room just turned 16 this summer so been heating it awhile. THE ONLY THING THAT CHANGED IS THe president and the price !!!!!

Windows in the sun room are triple glass e-glass highest rating made. (highest priced too.) Same with house . Spent 6 grand on 8 windows 5 yeasr ago for house. Roof in patio room is 6 inch SOLID Styrofoam panels Central Heat /air unit is 4 years old .House unit is 6 years old.

I know the factors behind an electric bill. I also know the FACTORS behind the massive inflation we are living with. One of them I complain about on here often and the other one poops himself when he gets around royalty .

Love to burn wood but between back issues , hernias, rotator cuffs, and arthritis that would be a hard no . Wanted to put a pellet stove in the patio room but momma said central heat air unit. Her room her money ,I just complain .LOL

It looks like the highest electricity costs are in the New England states and California.

Just about all prices go up with inflation. The domino effect. And Biden and his cohorts created this mess.

So, no one's electric utility offers "budget" billing to average the costs across the entire year?

According to this jbyrd63’s electricity rate went down. I wish he would say how many kilowatts he used in Feb. 2017 vs Jan. 2022. That may be why his bill is so high.

Jbyrd I'm not a Biden apologist but you have no clue what the real cause of inflation is. Biden is a part of it, not the only part.

It amazes me what you southerners pay to heat your homes. Dont you guys insulate or close your windows
Judging by my propane use its cost me about 500 bucks to heat my home since the last time I filled it 5 weeks ago. The difference is we have bee 20 to 30 below more than several night and sub zero highs since then . Propane is about 50 percent higher this winter, most likely it will cost me 1600 bucks to heat the house, I pretty much keep it at 70. The furnace will run in seven different months out of the year.

Danvee, not every state regulates their utility companies the same. Even in regulated states, if the utility"s wholesale cost goes up, they are generally able to pass that cost through.

That seems pretty outrageous even compared to northern climates.
I have to agree with others that insulation is your best option along with a wood stove.

But I also encourage you to look at your lifestyle. Simple things like closing off duct work to that patio room....or any other room without plumbing or that you don't use much. Also......is your house 2x4 or 2x6 construction ?

I am certain that I see greater temperature fluctuations than you do.
My only source of heat is wood and my only real draw on electricity is water heater and lights.

I use a switch to turn my water heater on for one hour every 24 hours. That provides enough hot water for dishes, showers and hand washing for two people....30 gallon heater.

I also almost NEVER have lights on. Even in the winter. I have mentioned on here how much I dislike daylight so my windows are constantly covered with blinds. The kitchen window s provide enough light to see well enough but that is the only room that I open the blinds.

Be a nazi about turning switches off.

Perhaps cut some styrofoam to cover all those windows in the patio room and close the door to it.

My electric bill for January usage was $154.16 for 372 KWH of usage. That works out to $0.4144/KWH. That is likely close to 5 times what you pay per KWH

My point is, you can make small changes in the way you live but you can also make big changes in the way your house functions.

Get that ceiling up to about R60 and your walls to R 21-30. Caulk around all windows and doors and maybe get some thermal curtains for your windows. You can still lose a lot of heat through glass even if it is triple pane and low E.

I also wonder if you have uninsulated ducts in an uninsulated crawlspace ?? I'll bet you do. Open foundation vents ?? Close them for the winter.

My guess is that your house may not have a vapor barrier installed either. That makes a huge difference in northern climates but some states and counties differ on their usage.

I'll bet there is a lot of cold air infiltrating through your electrical outlets too. You can check this with a "smoke pencil". A little device that you squeeze next to an outlet. It emits a puff of "smoke" ( some sort of fine dust).........if the outlet sucks in that "smoke" it means that warm air is exiting and cold air is entering through that outlet.

It's a lot of work but you can change those all to airproof boxes. Caulking the openings inside the existing boxes may help some too.

I showed that to my nephew , he works at a power plant in Madison , Indiana. He said hold on , cause the price of coal and natural gas is going to go up .
