According to the chart Waggler posted your rates went down in kentucky. Maybe complain to your state of Kentucky public utility regulation commission, they set the rates. Complain to the state about your state gasoline tax .26 cents a gal! Not a fan of Biden but put the blame where it belongs. Were fur, put in a wood stove, burn coon carcasses they have a lot of BTUs insulate or downsize, the government is not here to fix all the problems. Have the state tax all that pot that gets grown down there. Good thing your not living 200 years ago down there you would have never made it.

According to this jbyrd63’s electricity rate went down. I wish he would say how many kilowatts he used in Feb. 2017 vs Jan. 2022. That may be why his bill is so high.

Well according to my bill and the letter I got from the co-op it went up 11.83 %
Kilowatts was around 4800 .I think about 150 more than same period last year. But it was 31 days were last year was 30 .

Might ask your electric utility to put a recording voltmeter on your incoming line. I have seen this sort of thing because of a bad meter.

Oh man you are so smart . I bet they got a word for you. I AM putting the blame were it belongs. Didn't say I wasn't going to make it first off. Just pointing out the rate increase thanks to bobo and OBUMMER. Got a steam plant 4 miles from my house. At one time we had the cheapest electric in the nation. Obummer killed coal fired steam plants so they converted them to Natural gas. NOW the nut job in charge is wanting to close them. No fracking = limited Nat gas in this part of the country. As for government fixing all problems every one would be better off if they just stopped CAUSING MORE problems !!! Forget build back better slogan . How about put it back like he found it !!!

Programmable thermostats are nice. No sense in keeping a house 72 if nobody is home all day. Keep it down at night too while everybody's covered up with blankets.
White has a good point with the "hot water heater" laugh no sense in heating water 24 hrs a day. I do the same thing.
South windows give good passive solar heat when the sun is shining. Sun is grossly un-used.
The little woman hasn't turned the furnace on here in 3 years. In Florida. She welcomes the cool weather as it rarely comes around. The nights it frosts makes it cool inside the house.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Easier to control people if they don't have money and a high percentage are government dependent.

I do have a propane furnace I do run on occasion in the fall and spring when its too warm to fire up the stove. Its been a cold winter here in Minnesota, I can't imagine not having wood heat. The past few mornings I wake up to the entire house at 82 degrees and -10 to -20F outside.

what kind do you reccomend?

There are many good options out there. However, for the money, Englander brand wood stoves are very well built. They have a good following, built in the USA and are priced friendly. At Lowes they are branded under Summers Heat. I believe Home Depot also handles them under the Englander brand. I have a Englander nc-13 in a 20x40 insulated pole building, its a smaller stove but it heats like crazy. I've had the thermometer needle pinned (800 degrees) many times without any sign of warpage. Even in sub zero temps it will keep the shed over 70+ degrees. I know if I had this wood stove in my home it would easily heat it, but the basement would be a challenge if the stove was upstairs. Rather I have a wood furnace which is tied into the LP furnace duct work and blows the heat thru the registers giving a even heat throughout the house and basement.

Opened up the bill 578.45

That seems pretty outrageous even compared to northern climates.
I have to agree with others that insulation is your best option along with a wood stove.

But I also encourage you to look at your lifestyle. Simple things like closing off duct work to that patio room....or any other room without plumbing or that you don't use much. Also......is your house 2x4 or 2x6 construction ?

I am certain that I see greater temperature fluctuations than you do.
My only source of heat is wood and my only real draw on electricity is water heater and lights.

I use a switch to turn my water heater on for one hour every 24 hours. That provides enough hot water for dishes, showers and hand washing for two people....30 gallon heater.

I also almost NEVER have lights on. Even in the winter. I have mentioned on here how much I dislike daylight so my windows are constantly covered with blinds. The kitchen window s provide enough light to see well enough but that is the only room that I open the blinds.

Be a nazi about turning switches off.

Perhaps cut some styrofoam to cover all those windows in the patio room and close the door to it.

My electric bill for January usage was $154.16 for 372 KWH of usage. That works out to $0.4144/KWH. That is likely close to 5 times what you pay per KWH

My point is, you can make small changes in the way you live but you can also make big changes in the way your house functions.

Get that ceiling up to about R60 and your walls to R 21-30. Caulk around all windows and doors and maybe get some thermal curtains for your windows. You can still lose a lot of heat through glass even if it is triple pane and low E.

I also wonder if you have uninsulated ducts in an uninsulated crawlspace ?? I'll bet you do. Open foundation vents ?? Close them for the winter.

My guess is that your house may not have a vapor barrier installed either. That makes a huge difference in northern climates but some states and counties differ on their usage.

I'll bet there is a lot of cold air infiltrating through your electrical outlets too. You can check this with a "smoke pencil". A little device that you squeeze next to an outlet. It emits a puff of "smoke" ( some sort of fine dust).........if the outlet sucks in that "smoke" it means that warm air is exiting and cold air is entering through that outlet.

It's a lot of work but you can change those all to airproof boxes. Caulking the openings inside the existing boxes may help some too.

White I just read this. First you are so wrong on all the things you bet about my house. Vents are closed or water would freeze. Patio room is were my wife sits to drink coffee and watch the bird feeder. ALL windows are triple glass e- rated .It has it's own unit for heat. Windows have thermal cellulose light darkening blinds on them .Air ducts in attic under 14 in of insulation and they are too. Water heater is in garage so turning it off except one hr a day is a no go. Only thing I can do is what I'm doing . Guy coming Tuesday to blow in my insulation, AND pay the high electric bill Brandon has caused. If you never turn on lights I bet you wear glasses. That's why they say amish all wear them because trying to do things in low light.

I just checked my Dec bill and I used 1468 kilowatts. I live in 1248 sq ft house and I have in floor electric heat in my garage of 500 sq ft. My bill was $191. You used 4 times the electricity that I used. You should count your blessings your bill isn’t around $800. You must live in a castle.

Ken, I leave every light in the house on, 50 gallon electric water heater, 4 people living here. Electric cook stove and drier, one freezer besides refrigerator. My power bills runs from 70 at the lowest to 120 at its highest. Furnace use is what causes most of the variation. Summer is worse than winter

If I hear creepy uncle Joe say "you need to pay your fair share" one more time, I'm gunna scream.

Highest inflation in 50 years, 10 million jobs open and an immigration crisis at the border. What a mess. .

just look at the price increase since his plant has to switch to natural gas. From 2$ in 2021 to 5$ now

This summer was insane. My highest bill was nearly $200 after I said LGB, they offered their budget billing program which is a flat fee every month. I signed up. $85 vs $200 was a no brainer

If you have a lot of glass in a house you are not insulated. I dont care what kind of glass it has poor insulation value. It does have a solar effect in the day but goes south as soon as the sun goes down.
