I never thought about this until Robert said it years ago. Looking back, round jawed traps always performed better for me, regardless of on land or water.

X2 smile

I got turned off at an early age on square jawed traps with the 1.5 NW and Montgomery that were short-notched (from the guy before me), trapping coons. They had more tripped and empty traps than ones that held anything, like 5-1. Very easy to get jaded on traps when you get those results. It didn't happen with the round jawed traps of the day. Only square traps I've tried for years was the TS85 on beaver and I got the same dismal results. I'm sure it must be operator error but it doesn't happen with MB750's so... no square jawed traps for me, with one notable exception the NW #1 sj coil, them little guys hold in my experience.

Curious on why you consider the TS85 a square jaw but MB750s a round jaw? My 750s are as square as my TS85s, if not squarer.

I understand the logic.

But, I would say the advantage, in the instance of cutting crust at least, is a very fine line. And if you’re relying on the traps ability to come up through a crust that bad, both are gonna cost you animals and you should most likely be looking at your trap covering materials rather than jaw shape.

The advantages of the round jaw in that instance, is kinda like trying to milk another 25 fps out of a rifle load to get it shooting “flatter”.

I like both. Haven't noticed square jaws as a disadvantage. I do have more round jaw traps.

I have both. Never noticed a difference.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Ok, makes sense ADC. I don't have mine sitting in front of me, I just thought my MB750s when set had a very square profile, but they do have a slight curve to the top of the jaw. Totally forgot about that until you posted a picture pointing it out.

Maybe round jaws have a slight advantage coming up through crust, but spring strength is a much bigger factor, for that matter laminations would make more of a difference than jaw shape.
