Fur season pretty well over for the year. Time to get the trail camera bait stations operational. These came from just above my place. I really enjoy the trail cameras using road-killed deer as bait. I found several years ago that the bait needs to be wired down (I use 11-gauge wire) or the lions and the wolves just drag it off. I've got images of at least 17 different species using the bait during a 1-month period in February and March. Oftentimes, 20,000 or 30,000 images in a 24-hour period (mostly of black-billed magpies). Nonetheless, very interesting to me.

Bruce T - Yes, magpies. Not my favorite bird, but, being a corvid, pretty smart and intriguing bird. They're the only bird I know that does a "death dance" over a fallen comrade. Pretty interesting to watch.

Jack, I have never seen a magpie do a "death dance" and have seen a few die when in pairs. Maybe the shotgun blast told the living it was time to go. When have you seen the display the dance?

no[ they are called Holstein Pheasants and add a little challenge when gunning.
If you take their long tail and place a iron over it it becomes curly just like a mallard curl, now stick that in your cap and walk into the duck camp for a conservation opener.

Nice photos Jack

I would love to know, the mental admittance, of the death dance. Natives across this land have their death dance song....

I have been transfixed with the Nez Perce ....with their amazing Appaloosa breeding , up until their conquest.

I have nothing to add to this lovely subject , than this.....

Those are magpies. Very clever birds. Very common here.

I've seen parts of the dance many times. Periodically, we have problems with magpies preying on our new chicks. When it occurs, a 28-gauge usually fixes the problem. That dead bird is wired up to a fence around the brood yard. Other magpies will fly above the dead one, one at a time, hovering and talking. Periodically, they will land and try to encourage the dead bird to "get up" and go. Being unsuccessful, they usually take to the air once again, and do the ritualistic flight dance. I don't know if multiple birds partake in the dance, but often the "dancer" will be loudly encouraged by onlookers. Is it only the mate that dances? Do others "help out"?

Appears to be very intimate and to me, very interesting.

Jack

In the fall I found the remains of a deer and hauled it to the yard. In less than an hour the magpies found it...

Sounds like a chance for a shot at the second one to me. I have never wired one up, and shoot the second one once in range. Maybe if I would have waited a while I would have see it. Crows do the same thing responding to a crow in distress. I shot a few of them using a crow in distress call.

Leary, I believe you are correct. A military brand, I would guess.

This horse, not an appy, but a paint , I have liked the conformation of him. He is built for speed .

Thank you, Jack, for this intriguing subject, about magpies.

Dont forget the 12 Guage Salute.

Tie # 1 with 24" sting and 8 inch branch and throw into a tall tree. Then you will see the dance action start, reminder dont burn your finger tips on the barrel during the dance party
