Proper coolant concentration can help with the pitting on the outside of the liners. If it doesn't already have the coolant conditioner element installed you might consider getting one. Folliw the recommended change intervals from Cat. A lot of the external pitting is caused by a form of cavation erosion. Air bubbles in the coolant "explode" on the surface of the liner and over time the result is erosion into the liner wall. Once a small place gets started it begins to collect more bubbles which in turn causes more damage. Same thing also happens to engine bearings if the oil system becomes aerated. Somewhere i still have all the training publications that explain all this in detail. Worked on hundreds and hundreds of 3406 Cat engines over 30 years. Maybe not the most fuel efficient but they are fairly simple and treated right will run for a long time. well said..... and when ya step on the loud peddal they pull !!

Since I worked at a Cat dealer we only dealt with genuine Cat parts. Inframe repair generally only means that the engine wasn't removed for repair. Even the Cat kits have various levels of parts depending on the extent of the repair. A very basic inframe repair would just be new rod an main bearings, new or reconditioned cylinder packs, and seals and gaskets to reassemble. Depending on your budget, expected service life, hours/miles on engine, etc you can go from there to include rebuild, replace, or test other components like the oil pump, cylinder head, turbo, injectors. Not sure if I answered your question or not. All of our work was warrantied, parts and labor. All genuine Cat parts. All engines were dyno tested after repair too.

When I got this truck the coolant was old and nasty . I've changed it every other year since I've had it . I put a good extended life coolant .
Not implying you do, but always mix water with antifreeze. In its pure state, it doesn't work.

Pretty interesting. I did one, 4cyl tracked high lift. Rod bearings, crank cut, rad, and batts. Little bugger was big $$$ for parts.

Its just a machine. Even a 3406 needs a wrench put to it time to time.
I got the time to come give you a hand right now. Wish I wasn't still hobbling around.
