Which wind directions do you need to catch the lake-effect
up there? Im betting all of them outside of NE if the lakes arent
frozen...but then youre catching a nor'Easter which isnt fun. You're pretty much surrounded
dependant on ice cover.
It's amazing how a slight wind shift will pile 2 feet on you while a mile away
gets nothing. Lake-effect snow is something else.
Im about 8 miles south of Lake Erie in PA.
Western NY really gets it.

My area for lake effect snow is one of the worst in western NY. I live closest to Perrysburg
Now the Tug Hill region off Lake Ontario... That's a whole other ballgame there

Living on the Tug Hill Plateau, highest snowfall east of the Rockies, I know a little about Lake Effect snow. Lake Ontario almost never freezes over because it is very deep. Cold Winds out of the west, or northwest, like a Alberta clipper , flowing over a warm Lake Ontario is the perfect storm for lake effect snow. Redfield , NY , just west of my home, holds the record for lake effect accumulation in a 24 hour period. I think it is around 72”. The above map where it is purple and pink, core area of Tug Hill.

Lake Effect really gets the Tug when Ontario teams up with the Georgian Bay of Huron...Six inches an hour here when they get together!

This is from a single storm in 2006...

I believe the NYS snowfall record for a 24 hour period is 77" INCHES
during the Blizzard of 1977 at Sears Pond on Tughill Plateau. laugh

Wow

Wow is right! And I complain when we get a foot of snow with heavy winds!

So that was almost to the eaves on a 1 story house, if there was already snow on the ground. So much for moving around for a while!

Lake effect can pile up very fast, but it's usually pretty fluffy compared to the heavy wet snow that comes from a nor'eastern. A lot of times the LE machine will ramp up when a big storm from the south slides off into New England. That's a double whammy

Yes, you may be correct that’s north Of Redfield, I knew it was somewhere in the high 70” range.

A nnw wind is the worst in my area it gives it about 500 miles coming down the lake before It hits land where I am. The elevation climes to about 2200 feet when it leaves the lake snows hard in the hills. Son in-law said that they have over 4 feet at camp in the last three weeks. The last year I worked in the Montreal River area the hydro company recorded 22 feet on their weather station.
