A whole bunch of sources are saying there is a very bad seed shortage this year because of smaller amounts of seeds producec last year, supply chain issues and extremely high demand.
Keith I got all my seeds a month ago and some varieties that I wanted were already sold out.

Lots of first time farmer/homesteaders last year. Several things I wanted to pick up for the farm stayed sold out. Remer the canning jar and lid shortage? Buy your jars and lids now!! I am not kidding!!

Where do i buy seed ?
Gurneys any good? What about price wise? Gurneys is good so is Burpees. I buy alot of heirloom type seeds from Wilhites. Also your local feed store probably sells them or Southern States if you want to try to buy locally

Gurneys any good? What about price wise? We get a lot from Baker Creek in Mansfield MO. Great family and they work hard traveling the world finding heirloom seeds. They are a great company to support.

I am not kidding!! You are correct. I need a new building for canning supplies, bee keeping supplies, gardening, and chicken processing equipment. O and a new sugar shack. Being organized would save so much time and buying duplicate tools when I can't find the ones I know I have somewhere.

I am not kidding!! I haven't stopped looking and I haven't started finding ACe had some Purr brand last fall , unfortunately they are china lids and not the ball or ker I would prefer

2x for Baker Creek I have tomatoes that are 4" tall ready to be transplanted, & my peppers have FINALLY sprouted. Also beets, kale, & cabbage that is ready to be transplanted outside as soon as the weather permits. I'm starting some sort of seeds weekly now through may, and have a schedule of when we need to start the next batch. We put in a lot for us, & sell excess plants and produce. We do mostly heirloom on my farm, so seed saving helps ensure we have what we need for the next season. The last 2 years, seeds and plants were scarce in our area. I sold every potted plant/start I had quickly, and had people calling for weeks after asking for more.

Also your local feed store probably sells them or Southern States if you want to try to buy locally Heirlooms are ok. They usually don't have a lot of disease resistance and require a lot more spraying for bugs and ESPECIALLY fungus. If you want food in bulk with a higher chance of getting a good crop, get some hybrids also. Hybrids are simply a cross of different varieties that have exhibited disease resistance. Kind to like breeding cows with the bull with a big body and a small head. The genetic traits are picked based on physical attributes. A dead plant makes nothing.

BUT, BUT, BUT, the absolute FIRST thing you need to do before you do anything is to get a soil sample analyzed. It is free to get a box for your soil to be tested at your county extension office. The test is free also. It will just take shipping it to where it needs to go.
Results are emailed to me and adjustments are on the analysis based on the pH and K and P levels. It is that easy.
After eleven years of gardening, I finally had my soil analyzed and realized how stupid I had been for not doing it sooner. I had an EPIC garden this fall and can't wait to see what kind of garden I will have this spring as I have added amendments this winter. All because I took the time to have my soil analyzed.
It takes about two weeks to get your results back. It really is that easy.
Your neighbors will think you are a master gardener.

Something else y'all can do to increase your yield..add some cow manure to your soil if you can get it.
Lay it on Thick...let it weather till tiillin time and till it in. You'd be surprised how much stuff

Your neighbors will think you are a master gardener. ^THIS^ If you do nothing else get your ph right. Fertilzer is a waste of time and money if the ph isn't right as ph regulates how efficiently the plants can access nutrients.

Not all heirlooms are disease prone. Many are heirlooms solely for being tough survivors. But that might mean they lack the hybrid vigor to be productive. As in all things there are trade offs. Some like your beans are pretty much self pollinating and have no particular differences between open pollinated and F1. I prefer heirlooms but I grow both based on many factors. Productivity first with hardiness being up there as well. But some like the very shy bearing and disease prone brandywine tomato I'll baby just for the delicacy of flavor.

I had a lot of fun growing Jalapeños last year. Only had 2 plants, but I enjoyed it. Kept a whole bunch of seeds from them that I’m going to plant this year.
Going to plant about 70 jalapeño plants this year. For the fun of it!
Something about planting a seed and watching it grow. Probably why I have 8 kids lol.
Cold as ice!
