Can't compare Alaska to Wisconsin, it's not fair to Alaska. Wisconsin has a higher black bear population density in bear habitat than anywhere else in the world. Hunters in Wisconsin harvested 4,306 black bears in 2020, how many were harvested in Alaska? Wisconsin also has 3x the Boone & Crockett entries as Alaska. Takes a little longer to draw a tag, but that reduces competition and ensures you're not hunting shoulder to shoulder with someone else. If you think you’re not shoulder to shoulder in Wi, you haven’t hunted bear on public land recently!

Imagine if the DNR gave out more tags like some people want! The wi DNR has the bear season figured out to a science. It’s a money maker for them. Season opens when they start to shut down. If they really wanted to reduce bear numbers, they’d just open the season a week earlier…no need to give out more tags. Bears hammer baits all summer and stop mere days before season starts!
